Changed MJ phone number, but...

Post by mikepdx »

Hello all.

I'm not sure if this is a problem. Yet, anyway.

I received my Magic Jack in two days, hooked it up and it works very well.

I chose a prefix in my local calling area initially, but I found that some
of my friends, even though they have local telephone numbers, see that prefix as
long distance since they're using alternative land-line carriers on the local BOC system.
Presumably that's why, anyway.

So, after looking up the only other prefix in my area which is local, and verifying on the web
that it is definitely an exchange in a very nearby town, I used my one free change of telephone number.

Everything's just fine and dandy with my new MJ telephone number (prefix).
I'm not long distance from anyone in my extended local calling area anymore.
Excellent.

Just for giggles, I dialed my first (initial) MJ telephone number wondering if it would give me
a disconnected number message or just nuthin'.

Lo and behold, it (the abandoned number) still rings to me as well.
So, you can use either number presently, to access my one and only MJ. -Wierd.
When I dial out with MJ, everyone's caller ID sees the new number. -Perfect.
At my.magicjack.com it only shows only my new number.

Anyone know if the old number will just go away after MJ's servers update or whatever,
or will I have both available for incoming for good.

Don't want the old number, just curious.
Two days and counting and the old number works also.

The old number should be timed out after a few hours.

Greetings.
Thanks for the reply.

It's actually been more than 48 hours, but it has been the weekend.
Perhaps Monday.

When I changed my number from Dallas to Seattle, I saw a message that said calls to my old number would get forwarded for thirty days. I think this is a safeguard built into the system that gives you time to tell everyone your new number without having to sit down and made fifteen hundred phone calls all at once.

When I changed my area code, MJ customer service said the old number would be valid for 30 days, i.e., both numbers would work. Although it didn't affect me, I thought it was a rather nice feature to allow for friends, family, etc. to be notified.

NOTE: Looks like in my haste, I skipped over strndedinalska's post.
