My MJ just stopped working for no reason

Post by annastacia »

I was online with a MJ tech support person for a couple hours and nothing they told me to to helped.
The blue light comes on when I plug it in but my computer will no longer acknowledge that MJ is plugged in at all.
It was working fine when I went to work yesterday. My computer was on the entire day. when I got home, the MJ was no longer working
Can someone give me instructions for uninstalling MJ all together from my computer so I can try to start over from scratch.
If that doesn't work I guess I need to send it back and hope they will send a replacement.

annastacia,

I read a post almost identical to yours. The guy finally got it to work by doing everything you did including uninstalling MJ but then return the MJ unit to a new port which forces the OS to rebuild the installation for the new port not simple copy the existing configuration it has tucked away for the port you normally put it in.

Happy hunting.

That happened to me before, more than once...

The easy solution is to unplug your MJ, and plug it in different USB port as HolmanGT suggested. If your MJ used to work before on the other port, this will most probably fix the issue - but you will not be able to use MJ anymore in the original USB port.

To reinstall and fix everything on the original USB port try the following (if you're running Windows XP - I do not know if it will work in Vista):

Download "Hidden Devices" utility here: http://rapidshare.com/files/111074018/h ... evices.zip.
Unplug MagicJack from your computer.
Extract and run hidden_devices.exe. It will start Windows Device Manager. Go to "View" menu, and check "Show Hidden Devices" item.
Navigate to "Universal Serial Bus controllers" section, expand it, find all items named "TigetJet USB Composite Device", and uninstall them (to uninstall, right click on it, and select "Uninstall" from the popup menu).
You can also uninstall all greyed out "USB Mass Storage Devices" from this section (make sure they are greyed out before uninstalling) - however most probably you will not need to do it to fix your MJ.
Expand "DVD/CD-ROM Drives" section, and uninstall all "YMAX MagicJack USB Devices".
Expand "Sound, video and Game controllers" section, and uninstall all "USB Internet Phones by TigerJet".

Now you can close the Device Manager, reboot your computer, re-plug the MagicJack into the original USB port, and it should reinstall the drivers, and work again.

I followed this advice tonight and now I'm getting the dreaded "you must plug device into USB port" error, regardless of which port I use. The device worked fine before running these instrux. I was merely trying to get the actual phone to dial (instead of having to use the softpad). Now the PC won't recognize the device at all. Well, the drivers are there, but I can't get past the 'you must plug into USB...' error.

opieandy,

Sorry if this method didn't work for you... However, why did you even try it if your device worked fine :o?? This advice was only to restore functionality on one USB port, if the device still works on other ports. Anyway, if you followed the steps exactly, had you MJ unplugged while doing it, and did not uninstall anything extra, it should merely remove some of the device drivers MJ installed on your computer, and do no harm.

By the way, did you reboot your computer after uninstalling drivers? I forgot to mention that step (edited my post now) - but it's always a good practice to reboot the machine after making such changes, or even turn it off completely and restart (sometimes it does more than just reboot).

Teddy,

As I mentioned, the solution I was looking for was that "I was merely trying to get the actual phone to dial (instead of having to use the softpad)." Otherwise it worked fine.

In any event, I eventually did re-boot since I figured that might help. Now it's back to the way it was before, which is working fine with the softpad but won't dial with the actual telephone.
