I'm thinking of getting a magic jack plus, really to use while travelling, on my cell phone with the app for iPhone. Does the app work well? And can I choose the phone number assigned to me for call backs?

I'm not clear: are you interested in the app, the device or both?
If you get the app and the device and use the same phone number for both, it tends to cause havoc when you have both devices on the same network. For myself, I've found calls immediately go to voice mail when you have more than one device/app with the same number on the same network, even if you have a very long ring time.
If you're interested in the app, try it before you buy it. Most people have found it's an battery drain.
If you have a laptop for travel, your best bet might be to buy the device and not necessarily the app.
