Flat panel HDTV, LCD or Plasma?

Post by LikeMagic »

I just hate projection HDTVs: CRT, DLP or LCD. What's your favorite flat panel LCD HDTV or plasma HDTV? 50" or bigger, the bigger the better :) Price and where to buy are helpful

I would prefer a nice painting that retains it's value, you can keep the idiot box.

LCD HDTV anyday, I have this one Samsung 52 inch 1080p LCD HDTV and a Sharp 37 inch 720p LCD HDTV

Love both of them, espeacily when i hook them up to my pc for games and hd flix...I bought the 52 inch samsung a couple of months ago because it was on sale for $2,099, plus it had the energy star logo and was very light, around 60 pounds is all. I bought the sharp a couple of years ago for around $1,800 i think... I did research before purchasing a LCD over Plasma... Longer life span, energy efficient, very light, glareless, awesome with PC's etc;..

I had a plasma once......... Now I have a LCD TV as well as a LCD monitor for the comp.... Plasma are way over-rated as well as over priced.
Do not buy Phillips/Magnavox anything tho if you want something to last at least a year.

I think the LCD is the way to go, Gooney how do you like the Samsung 65? I picked up the 81 series a month ago and it is one of the most amazing Tv's I have ever seen. It has also come down over 800 hundred dollars since I got it, and thank goodness Best Buy lets you price match for 60 days after you purchase.

I LOVE IT!!! The only thing i dont like is the huge remote and how the navigation options is setup... I wish it was like my sharp remote... small and easy to navigate, but its no big deal. I can easly lift this 52 inch tv and hook it to my wall mount by me self  or move it anywhere in me house by me self hahaha.

If im gonna get me a 60 inch hdtv ill go for a 1080p and built in HD not HD-ready unless you wanna go cheap... My brother inlaw has a 47 inch flat plasma and that tv gets real hot, if you walk by it, you can feel the heat. When i play crysis, sometimes i fall asleep lol... wake up the next day and the tv is still on and it never gets hot. I will never go plasma no matter how good the deal is.

I figured I had to "stimulate" the economy with my coming "economy stimulus plan" check from uncle Sam, so I just got my family this Toshiba 52HL167 52" 1080p LCD set from my local Fry's:

I was debating between that tv and the samsung when i was shopping for lcd and end up forking a little more money for the energy star and most of all the very light 52 inch samsung ... I wish we had a FRY's here. :(

Yup, the Samsung LNT5265F is definitely lighter than the Toshiba 52HL167.

Samsung LNT5265F, 75 lbs (with stand,) 63 lbs (without stand) vs
Toshiba 52HL167, 101 lbs (with stand,) 91 lbs (without stand).

But with this TV size, 2 persons are still required to handle the TV when mounting, lifting.

I can lift and mount the tv by myself... I have a 30 - 55 inch universal mount that has an arm that extends out... I can lift the tv and hook it on the arm, very easy by myself. Oh and one thing if youre gonna get a wall mount for a 52 inch tv, i would get a mount that extends out, it would be a lil more but saves the hassle and frustration when trying to get into the power plug, rca, hdmi inputs/outputs etc;...if you get a cheap flat mount, you will have to lift the tv off and on everytime you want to get into the inputs/outputs thats if it is in the back of your system. Some tv has all the inputs/outputs on the side for convenient like my 37 inch sharp. I have most of my inputs/outputs on the back of the samsung and only some on the side. My sharp is 55 pounds and my samsung is only 8 pounds more. I am 6'1 and have long arms, maybe folks with short arms will have trouble when lifting and mounting the 52 inch tv by themself.

EDIT: Here is the mount that i have LCD TV MOUNT

I'm using the Bayside Alpha TV Stand (AVC552-10VS) with built-in swivel mount from Costco. This is a 3-in-one, you can (1) put TV on top with its own stand, (2) mount TV on built-in swivel mount or (3) mount TV on wall. This is what it looks like:

Thats a pretty cool stand... When you wall mount, how many inches from the wall to the back of your tv and How much did you pay for this stand?

I used the built-in swivel mount option (first picture) so I didn't have to wall mount. If I were to used the wall-mount option, it'd be about 2" from the wall, too tight to connect any wiring afterward. This TV stand costs a mere $199 from Costco. Similar stands in Fry's would have set me back about $300-$350.

I have this Logitech Cordless Desktop MX 5000 Laser

My pc is downstairs, 50 ft away from the family room and no problems using the MX5000 keyboard/mouse from the family room.

While I wait for a DVI-to-HDMI cable to arrive, let me ask you this. Which resolution do you set your PC to display on the HDTV display? 1920x1080? Can you read text at 10-12 feet without using a pair of binoculars?

Yes i have it at 1920x1080 and my lazyboy is 15ft away from the tv, i can see the text just fine when surfing and checking email... You can always enlarge the text in your browser if you cant see them. I have a 8800gt 512 hdcp grafix card, a dvi to hdmi adapter, a 60ft hdmi cable, 3 3.5mm 60ft audio cables for my 5.1 surround sound.

What kind of video card do you have?
