Canadian & International Calls Erratic and Unreliable

Post by XiNA »

I sent a MJ to my son who is travelling in Europe. He’s having the same problem as I am. Calling Canadian and international numbers is just plain erratic. Sometimes it manages to connect but mostly it’s forwarded to the “fake” ring. He’s having a lot of trouble calling other European numbers. We thought it would be a great solution to a European cell since the international rates are so competitive and he moves from country to country often. Unfortunately it’s too erratic to be of any use. How long can you sit in a Greek Starbucks redialling numbers hoping to complete a call? MagicJack customer support offered no solution or explanation. Unplug, plug is all that they can offer which does nothing whatsoever. Tried every other “recommended” solution. The fact is that it is just too erratic to rely on.

Try the suggestion here: http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/cana ... t1256.html

The *67 solution works like a charm :D

I agree, long distance could be a lot better.

*67 solution appears to works on Canadian numbers “like a charm” but can you (or would you) apply it non-US/Canadian numbers? Where would you insert the “*” ? In the country code? Or am I being absurd?

But I have to admit that when a MJ call does mange to come through to our Canadian home phone from Europe the quality of the voice is very good considering its coming from a tiny ASUS EEE PC microphone and usually in a very noisy café. I can even hear the dishes clattering but have no problem understanding the speaker.

They just need to improve the consistency and reliability of service.

Is it possible that the United States Area Code you are dialing 'from' is an issue?

Our MagicJacks are using the 313 area code in Detroit with calls being made from Mississauga Ontario and Australia to Canadian numbers. We do not seem to be experiencing this problem, and several calls per day are being made from the MagicJack located in Mississauga to Canadian numbers.

We do, of course, have problems when the whole or parts of the system are having a 'bad day', and we are keeping the *67 solution handy- just in case.

In summary for those in the know, does the caller's area code make a difference? Are some area codes prone to this problem while others seem to be OK???

Comments?

Oddly enough we have three MagicJacks with three different area codes, Florida, New York and Ohio. One MagicJack is presently in Greece (New York area code). That one has issues calling Canada and other European countries. But calls go through to New York without issue. He uses a Boingo high speed wireless connection in a Greek Starbucks and when a call does connect the voice quality is fabulous. The thing is if you’re travelling, you don’t have time to sit around drinking endless coffees waiting for the MJ system to clear. The two we have at home have issues calling home or other Canadian numbers (our 3 cell phones from 2 different providers). But it is very erratic. A problem can evaporate in a few minutes and manifests itself mostly in the evening.
