phone cut off

Post by phillipsvilla »

I have the following problem. My phone will cut off after I start talking anywhere from 1 min to
10 mins. I will receive a beeping signal several times before it cuts off. The same type that
you would receive if you had a low battery. I am using a powered usb to give more power.
I have talked to magicjack"s tech people several time with no results. I just tried to call
a person today and it cut out after 1 1/2 mins. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It could be your internet connection. If it's slow & flakey, VOIP packets will be dropped causing issue and eventually the call server would drop the call. Try to test your internet connection to see how well it would handle VOIP call. Select test to Boston or other city with this URL:

What's your ISP? Download/upload speed?

Thanks Likemagic,
I ran the test that you suggested and it came a 4.4 between my address and Boston.
According to that report, I should have a very good connection. I am using a new
cordless phone that is 5.8 gigs. Any other suggestions will be appreciated.

VOIP score of 4.4 is as perfect as you could get for VOIP calls :)

Do you have call cut-off issue for all calls or only for some calls? Does it happen all the times or only recently? How is your PC connected to your router? Wired LAN or wireless LAN connection? Is it possible it's the poor WiFi signal if you're using wireless connection? I'm trying to narrow down possible causes here :)

It cuts off on all calls and it has happened ever since I installed which has been about
2 months. I am wired LAN through the router. I have even tried another phone
that is hard wired and the same thing happens. I am at a loss as to what what is
going on. I have tried their fixes and updates nothing seems to work. I am using on
XP on an HP amd 64x2. If I can supply you with additional information I will be
happy to do so. I would just like to find some way to fix.
Thanks, Ray

Ok, give me all the details, the more details the better chances for me to understand your setup. Here are some starter questions. Feel free to provide as much details as possible.

Do you have another VOIP service active at this time?
Do you have cut-off issue for outgoing calls only or also for incoming calls?
Have your tried MJ device with a different PC?
Do you have XP w/ SP2 and all critical fixes?
Do you have any issue with PC in general? Slow? Reboots often?
Do you have any issue with Internet Explorer in general?
Who's your ISP? Speed up/down?
Are you running any proxy server? Ad-blocker apps?
What software firewall do you have?
Do you run any VPN software?

Ray,

Make a test call to 415-421-0020. This plays a very loud tone for 9 seconds out of every 10. You can set the phone down and do other work; it will be easy to hear when it has disconnected. If working correctly, the call should not automatically disconnect for at least one hour.

While this is playing, start a ping from a command prompt, e.g.

Code: Select all

ping -t yahoo.com
If the test call stays up for, say, 20 minutes or more, perhaps MJ has a server side problem to places that you call. Make some calls to toll-free and interstate destinations and see if you have the same trouble.

Otherwise, when the test call dies, see if the ping shows 'request timed out' for several consecutive packets. If so, your Internet connection is intermittent; troubleshoot by testing from another computer, testing with one PC connected directly to cable modem, etc.

If the test call dies but the ping continues ok, then the SIP and/or RTP path might be getting broken (test by bypassing your router, and by disabling your software firewall, but for security don't do both at the same time). Otherwise, the MJ software could be conflicting with other software on your PC (test by trying it on another PC on your LAN). Conceivably, there is a hardware defect in the MJ device.

If all else fails, we can use a tool such as Wireshark to see why you are getting the beeps (RTP packets stop coming in, BYE gets sent from server, etc.)

Just one other simple thing to try. Go into Task Manager Processes and locate magicJack.exe right click on it and set it's priority to Higher Than Normal and see if this makes a difference.

phone cuts out

Post by phillipsvilla »

I ran the test on the 415 number and the first time I had a cut out. I then went into
task manager and changed priority as suggested and retested 415 number and did
not have any cut outs for over 20 minutes. So, We will see maybe that will clear
up my cut out problem. Thanks to all, Ray

One thing that I have found that if you reset magicjack priority to higher than normal
when you shut down your computer and restart it the priority will return to the normal
setting. Any way to keep magicjack on the higher than setting all the time.
