I spoke too soon 
When I add to contacts directly from the call log it positions the new contact at the top of the list identifying the name with the phone#. Edit the number to a new name but the contact still appears at the top of the list (not alphabetized correctly) If I add contacts from the "Contacts" then new items are correctly alphabetized. So trick is to reboot when this occurs.
