Starting from scratch-what internet provider should I choose

Post by usagisisa »

Hi guys,

I just moved to the Chicago area, and saw some ads for the magic jack. Thought I would try it out, but I haven't even picked an ISP yet. The big ones available here are Comcast, AT&T and I think Verizon also.

I thought that since I was starting from scratch, I could try and set up to avoid as many problems as possible.

Any feedback on which will work better with the MagicJack? Does it make a difference?

Thanks,

Usagi.

I have cable and it works great. I've been reading about Comcast shaping traffic, but don't have any personal experience to confirm or deny the allegation. DSL is a good, strong alternative if you have enough upload (more than 128k) since I like to allow 100k up and down as a minimum requirement. If you have insufficient bandwidth, you may experience some degradation of your call quality.
Windows Vista and Laptop with XP SP2 on the road. Occasionally, a Mac if my Windows machine isn't working.

What are your choices for speed plans & cost? I have Comcast for video & internet (12Mb down, 1.5Mb up). Service has been excellent for both video & internet, a little pricey but very reliable
