Breaking Up
Calls break up - like when one has a bad connection on a cell phone. The voice cuts in and out. I'm using a laptop on wi-fi, could that be the problem? I have FIOS with 15 down and 5 up. My wireless laptop connection gets 10 down and 4 up.

Breaking up
I am having the same problem and would love for someone to make some suggestions. I have switched phones, switched computers, rebooted the router & modem, went through the MagicJack online checklist and am still getting a "pulse tone" type of in and out of the connection. Breaking up in a very regular pulsating rhythm. It is much better on incoming calls but outgoing calls are terrible and you can't hear each other. I really was hoping this would work for me but if I can't get any help, I guess I will send it back for a refund.

Try to test your internet connection for VOIP call handling:

Thanks. I saw that in another post and went through the test and we failed miserably(1). Just spent the last 30 minutes or so online chat with my comcast broadband troubleshooters too. They say my modem is showing "one or more alarms" whatever that is; so I'm going to shut it down again and try again but it looks like I am not getting anywhere. I really hoped this would work. But the troubleshooters are not techs and maybe the techs know some issues related to voip or MagicJack specifically.

If you're comcast, make sure you aren't getting traffic shaping. Also, it sounds as if your routing is a little cluttered to your phone line connection. Run a few speed tests at different locations and see if you're getting shaky connections.
Windows Vista and Laptop with XP SP2 on the road. Occasionally, a Mac if my Windows machine isn't working.

Re: Breaking Up
Are you using 2.4Ghz cordless phone with your MJ? If so it may interfere with your WiFi router (also on 2.4Ghz band) and causes upload/download problems.GaryPSU wrote:Calls break up - like when one has a bad connection on a cell phone. I had my internet connection checked this morning and they replaced some of the equipment and say that it is now testing perfectly. So I went back to the website that checks the voip connection and now it won't even connect to be tested! I do have a 2.4ghz phone but it is hooked up to the landline and I have been hooking up an old fashioned cord phone to the MagicJack. When I dial out, the breaking up in signal is terrible. I really want this to work! I'm wondering if I can take it to a friend's house and try it there to see if it's my equipment or the Magic Jack itself? If there are any other suggestions, I'd love to hear it. I want to send it back this week if I can't resolve this issue. Thanks for all the help.

I had the same problem ever since I got the thing. Did everything I could and spent countless hour on chat. I have Road Runner cable which is pretty fast, at least more than enough to run MJ.
Finally here is what cured my problem for some reason:
I got an old 466 PII 126 MB Ram
Loaded XP SP2 and nothing else.
Hooked up MJ to this old PC, and works fine now. No more cutting out on a regular basis.
This old PC has only 1 funtion! Running MJ and nothing else installed.
My Brother in Law has the same problem. As I type this I am hunting around for an old throw away PC that will only run MJ.

That sounds like a good plan to try next. Does the phone ring when you get an incoming call? Or do you need to be by the computer screen to see that the phone is ringing? Or do you even need a monitor hooked up for that kind of set up?
Thanks, KM

Yes, everything works as if I had MJ hooked up to my main PC. The phone rings fine. I get Voice Mail via Email. My wireless sets work as well as the 20 year old giant ringer phone I have.KMeyer2986 wrote:That sounds like a good plan to try next. Does the phone ring when you get an incoming call? I have the cheap PC running through a CHEAP Dynex router. I leave the monitor off most of the time. I did however install Dameware so I can access the PC remotely. The Dameware client does not use much resources, so I have had no issues with remote control.
Bottom line: Old PC sitting close to main PC going through a cheap router.
Best MJ has ever worked. I have eliminated my days on Tech Chat!
