MagicJack website down a sign of bigger problems?

Post by wgnweb »

magicJack is temporarily offline for maintenance.
Please try again later.

Anyone think this is a sign of larger problems? MJ in trouble? It has been down for at least a week. Security problems, maybe finanical problems, maybe legal problems, or something else?

I have searched the web for articles or any sign but couldnt find anything. Has anyone else seen anything on the web behind the reason for the lengthy website "maintenance"?

for people like me who use this as a primary provider, this message is pretty serious. i noticed it wednesday maybe tuesday of last week. I don't see any progress and it was working using my soundcards and now they are telling me not to dial during these updates. this is the most pathetic example of customer care i have ever been expierianced.

Well I am not saying they ARE in trouble but I have seen this type of thing before with other companies. I saw it with a computer company in town. They said they were going to be closed for inventory and a few days later they put up the "Closed for Good" sign. I know I wont be getting more than a year at time. I would rather lose $20 instead of $50.

I can still get into http://my.magicjack.com

Well you are wrong about the cache but it is something wrong with my browser. I have been getting the message for over a week that it was down for maintenance and I still get it and it isnt the cache. With that said however I just tried it on another PC and it worked fine. I have noticed that on my laptop when I go to http://www.magicjack.com it does not forward it to its live index file at http://www.magicjack.com/1/index.asp

Hmmm interesting.

Anyone else getting this problem?

Alan I realized what the problem is.

Magicjack changed web servers which gave them a new IP address. Remember last year when they were dropping the chat feature we changed our host files so we could still get in? You need to edit c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts and DELETE the lines:
63.209.28.41 www.magicjack.com
65.110.6.50 magicjack.com

www.magicjack.com no longer resolves back to 63.209.28.41 you could change it to the new server IP but since no one uses that chat program anymore you can just delete both lines and REBOOT your computer.

Well I guess there is no crisis over at Magicjack after all. Sorry to scare anyone. Only us old users that used the chat would have the problem.

They put the "server is down for maintenance" page up there so while the servers were propogating they would get that message from the old server instead of cant fine page errors. It takes up to 48 hours for all servers to propogate.

ok mine is fixed and working with my telephone handset. what i had to do as someone recomended, i delete two lines in my host file that I added so i can get to the magicjack chatroom. Nobody is ever in that chatroom so i put the host file back to the way it was. Then i went to MagickJack - MagicFix to get my magicjack configured back to the way it was. Please note there will be one message that should say magicjack has had configuration changes. please unplug your magicjack then plug it back in for them to take effect. then after that i had my blue light on and my telephone handset worked finally after almost a week of no service. go to the magicjack website down a sign of bigger problems thread and the 4th post by wgnweb has the rest of the information on how to check your host file in windows notepad and fix it from there. good luck everyone

I fixed the problem on home desktop with a magicJack by following the above advice.
One problem left is on my laptop my other magicJack won't connect to the Internet as I still get the message in the softphone saying "Attention You are receiving a very important upgrade within the next 60 seconds Please do not dial during these upgrades." Also there is still a message saying "magicJack Please connect to the Internet, then double click here." After double clicking I get the following message "magicJack was unable to contact our registration server. Please check your internet connection. If you can browse other web pages, it means our server is temporarily down. Please restart your phone again in a few minutes. We apologize for any inconvenience." Note: the blue light is ON and now I can get to magicJack.com with everything up on site. When I go to http://www.magicjack.com/4/magicfix.asp everything has a check mark to the left except the last item just has a circle spinning wheel that says "checking the magicJacks configuration..."

Any ideas on what to try next?

I'll try a few more things and if I can't get magicJack to run again on my laptop I'll get a cheap laptop to run magicJack.

checking the magicJacks configuration...
this is where your magicjack should be fixed. have patience and let it work through this step unless 15 minutes go by then you must have another problem. unplug the magicjack for atleast 15 seconds then plug it back in and try the magic upgrade then goto magicfix...that is what i did.

next I went to start and run and typed in ping proxy1.nashville.talk4free.com and received back 66.116.109.59
so I put in the windows hosts file
66.116.109.59 proxy1.nashville.talk4free.com

So far still a no go as magicJack still is saying it can't connect on Internet with laptop. I can get to magicJack website ok.

Open Internet Explorer and go to TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS>CONNECTIONS>LAN SETTINGS
Make sure there is no proxy server in there. Uncheck all boxes for testing.

That's the way I already have it set. I'll try a few more things to see if magicJack will work on the laptop again.

Problem solved this morning! :P I turned off the firewall and anti virus and the magicJack just started to work! I then turned back on the firewall and antivirus and magicJack is still working. I changed the area code from 615 to 502. I hooked a phone up and made and received calls with my Louisville 502 area code on my laptop and it's crystal clear audio! I love my magicJacks!
