QoS newbie & Any new Central FL users having problems?

Post by deltona_fl »

I'm in Central Florida and chose a 954 area code (since my 386 isn't availalble).
I'm having jitter problems and haven't cured it yet.
Just wondering if I'm all alone?
Thanks,
Deltona_FL, scratching head over what a QoS is and where in the world I would find it
to reset it.

Same problem in Deland. Using 407 area code on windows XP system with a very fast brighthouse cable connection. Audio dropouts are so poor that most calls have to be returned via my cell phone! Tech support had me go through all the usual steps such as Magicfix, installing upgrades, changing ports, rebooting modem and so forth. No solution has worked for more than one call! I suspect the issue is on their server side. Overloaded perhaps?

Hey DeLand, nice to hear from you.
I really want this thing to work! When it does work it is great!
I have ultra x-Speed DSL Bellsouth. With their Westell modem I'm also using Linksys
Router/Firewall.
Some of these posts says to disable my firewall......
Isn't there a reason I have the Firewall in the first place, why do I want to
disable it????
Well, it is late, I will check back tomorrow for more things to do to my computer
so I can get this MJ working so I can hear the person on the other end of the connection.
My point in purchasing the MJ in the first place.
Good night,

How did you get a 407 area code???? I just got mine about 2-3 weeks ago and would have gladly chosen
407 instead of 954.
Oh well, I'm really waiting for 386
Good night again,
Deltona

I set MagicJack up yesterday and 407 was available. I implemented the suggested changes such as background process, increasing the memory(I set both min and max to 2048), etc. I think I do notice a little improvement but the dropouts are still present every few seconds or so. I'll give it a few days and see if things improve beofore giving up on this thing.

Try unplugging magicJack and going to http://www.testyourvoip.com/ and see if the site locates any problems for you.

If all looks good there and your using xp go into the Task Manager after you reconnect your magicJack and raise it's process priority to "above normal" by locate magicJack in the task list and right clicking on it making the selection for priority level.

The recommendations about disabling firewall were I am sure meant to be for a short duration test to see if firewall settings are your problem. There are many different models of Linksys routers. If your uncomfortable with turning it off even to run a test then you'll just need to make sure that UDP ports 5060 and 5070 and TCP ports 80 and 443 are open. The magicJack audio during a call is passed on a randomly selected RTP port between 10,000-20,000 so this area also needs to be allowed for magicJack's use. The so called PnP settings on some routers will open these for you if not they can be manually taken care of in your router settings.

Depending on the exact model and firmware version of you router there may be folks here who can walk you through the needed settings. But first test with the site I posted above so we can see where the problems may lie.

I don't think you are. When I got my magicjack, I got a Florida number ( 863 ) because the system did not and still does not know that there is an 337 area code. I had a few friends in FL., so why not. BIG ERROR.. When I make a call, most of the time the person on the other end cannot here me that well. ( I call then back on Skype ) If I call into someplace where I have to use the key pad, I here the number tones twice, again call back on Skype. I have been waiting for them to open up some Louisiana number, but I don't think that will happen in my lifetime.

Every week or so, I try it again. Still bad.

So now I just give out the MJ number when some form on the net asks for a phone #. Keeps the junk calls down.
By my hand on this date, at the British Petit Manchac trading post,
Territory of Orleans,
I am

Much better today

I have been using MagicJack all day today and things have improved dramatically since I implemted the recommended changes. I'm afraid to make any other changes for fear of things returning to the way they were.

I'm running a Dell Dimension 4700 using XP. I have MJ running as a service, when I try to up the Priority I get error "The operation could not be completed. Access is denied." I am logged in as the "administrator". Any ideas?
