Hello, I'm a newbie on this forum so please beg my pardon if you've read about what I'm about to talk about before.
My MJ came today in the mail and I unwrapped and connected it to the computer but it wasn't recognized. In the connection picture, MJ is held so that the USB connect is at the upper part of MJ. This didn't work for me as I was unable to connect it as the package illustration showed. The only way was to turn MJ around so that the connector was at the lower part of the connecting end. It then went into the USB port easily. I don't know if that means anything or not but that's the only way I was able to connect it at all. I've also tried the extension cord that comes with it but WIN XP Pro didn't recognize that, either. Don't know what to do now. Ideas?
Does the type of landline phone make any difference? I have a couple of very old phones one of which I connected up and punched in a number but couldn't hear any ringing at the other end. I wonder why that was. Well, I've been using cell phones a great deal so I may have forgotten how a traditional phone works.
How can I get WinXPPro to recognize MJ and so see what those options are when they are loaded to the screen?
Thanks for any directions.

Windows XPPro doesn't 'see' MJ'

When you plug in the MJ and wait about 30 seconds, does a blue light come on? Go to My Computer and see if there are any new drives called MAGICJACK or magicJack. One should be a CD drive. Any files there? If there is an autorun.exe, double-click it and installation should start. You can't make calls until you go through a registration procedure, choose your area code, etc. With luck, this will all happen automatically.

After thinking this would all be done automatically, that is, WinXP would detect MJ and do all these things, as I thought I understood through my reading about MJ, I finally realized that I would have to look up these things which I did. The blue did come on and I went to the 'My Computer' and did these things. Apparently things are not so automatic as I understood them to be from reading. MJ is now operational but sound is off as I was switching connections around.
Thank you for your reply.

When you insert the MJ, Win XP would normally see the autorun file and start installation. This is the same mechanism that starts "setup" when you insert a software CD. However, this automatic mechanism can be a security risk, so it is disabled on many machines set up for business use, by some personal security software, and manually by some prudent users. My guess is that one of those happened in your case.
