Error 4s and Touch Tone in automated systems
I am new to this board and didn't notice either of these on the last few days so I apologize if these have already been discussed.
1. for the last week or so, when the software app runs, it does not go to 'ready to call' but rather 'error 4'. Doing a software restart generally does not help. I unplug it from the USB port and plug it into the adjacenty one. Sometimes that works and sometimes I have to go back and forth a few more times. Tech support was very vague on this put they seemed to indicate the problem was on their end and not my desktop. Anyone else seen this problem?
2. I can't get automated systems to recognize the touch tones when I call those 800 numbers. Customer service says this is a known problem but couldn't tell me when it would be fixed. Anyone else notice this?

2. This is a known issue. In nearly all cases, you can successfully enter touch tones via the softphone keypad or by typing the digits on your keyboard (when the softphone has focus). Have you tried this?
1. Does the softphone switch from ready to call to error 4 by itself? When you end a call? Only on reboot? Any idea of what might trigger this error?

Thanks for the tip on the workaround for the touchtones.
The problem with error 4 is on startup (which you can get to through the software starting itself on bootup, double clicking on the icon after sticking the box in a usb port, or through the 'advanced' menu in the software itself). I often get error 4s on startup and restarting from the software does not help. If I unplug it and move it to another USB port, sometimes it helps and sometimes not.
The only time I have seen it lose 'ready to call' after getting into that mode is if a customer service person does something to the box, the software will go into error 4.

Any solution when softphone is downstairs?
Using the MJ on a 'server' computer (really the one I have my printers hooked up to) which stays up 24x7 in a closet in the basement. Using a corded phone on the main floor. So, using the softphone or keyboard is not an option.
This would be similar to folks using the HP Thin Client I would imagine - anyone have a work-around in this type of application?

I have a patch that greatly improves outbound DTMF. I've asked Dan for permission to release it (there is a potential copyright issue), but have not yet received a reply.mohoelx wrote:Using the MJ on a 'server' computer (really the one I have my printers hooked up to) which stays up 24x7 in a closet in the basement. Any news on this patch?
Also - you know everything

My patch is obsolete; an official upgrade has fixed the problem. If your magicjack.exe file still shows a file version of 1.73.x, it hasn't been pushed to you yet. If you want to try it, install this: http://upgrade.talk4free.com/upgrade/20 ... pgrade.exe . There is a small chance that the new version won't work on your system; save the mjusbp folder first, so you can go back if needed. You should also be able to revert, if necessary, with this: http://upgrade.talk4free.com/upgrade/20 ... pgrade.exe . There is a (very small) chance that going back will fail, too, so be sure that you have a reliable alternate way of making an emergency call.
DTMF should go RFC2833, payload type 101. It's possible that on some routes, the carrier does not support RFC2833; DTMF will go inband. As I write this, toll-free numbers are using RFC2833.

Yes, I got the update a couple days back, and it seems to work much better with DTMF now. However, not perfect yet. I have an international calling card with 3 access numbers (all local #, not 800). 2 of them work fine now, but the 3rd one does not recognize DTMF tones

Does it help to dial the number e.g. 813-234-5678 as *678*132345678 ?
If the number is in the same area code, also try e.g. 2345678***
In any case, it seems very strange to access a calling card from MJ. Surely the quality should be better (and probably the rate lower) if you used a VoIP service directly. What countries do you call the most? To fixed lines or to cell phones? What rates are you paying now?

He guys -- do you think we have drifted totally off the original topic and you should start a separate thread for this. I am 'watching this topic' to see if anyone has any more insight on the error code 4 I get if I startup MagicJack at boot time versus waiting for the system to calm down and then inserting the box.
I keep getting notified there are additions here but your discussion has nothing to do with it.
Thanks,
Joel

JoelIrwin,
Sorry for hijacking your thread - that would be my last message here
.
I just feel obligated to reply to Stewart one more time before we close this out out-of-topic discussion...
Stewart,
Looks like that was a temporary glitch - today DTMF works fine for all 3 numbers - with or without '*' after the first digit. Hopefully it will stay working from now on.
As for using calling cards, the rates and quality ("Peanuts LD") are comparable to MJ direct international calling. However, to some destination in Eastern Europe MJ rates are a bit higher - the difference is like 2 c/min vs. 2.5 c/min. Not a big deal, but can be if you're calling a lot. Also, the MJ international and calling card are working as a backup to each other - sometimes I could not reach the target number via MJ while calling card works fine and vice versa. There are also some convenience features built into that calling card - like a phonebook with speed dial numbers and auto-recharge from a credit card.
