Works at home...but not at work (error 3)

Post by jstevenmoore »

I have been using MagicJack for a couple of weeks now. Always on my laptop. At home everything everything works without a hitch - no router adjustments were necessary. But when I tried running it at work I get the "Please connect to the Internet, and double-click here [error 3]" At work I tried forwarding UDP ports 5060 through 5070 and TCP ports 80 and 443 to my laptops IP address. (BTW, I did not have to do that at home) But it still doesn't work. But when I go home -- works like a charm.

I can only assume that the problem lies with our network at work. I just ran a connection test:

:::.. testmy.net test results ..:::
Download Connection is:: 4942 Kbps about 4.94 Mbps (tested with 6144 kB)
Download Speed is:: 603 kB/s
Upload Connection is:: 1382 Kbps about 1.4 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB)
Upload Speed is:: 169 kB/s

Thanx!

Router make and model? Hardware and firmware version? Log into it and check the WAN IP address. If the router gets an address from the cable modem that begins with 10, 192.168, or 172.[16-31], then there is a NAT at the ISP that could be causing trouble. Can you test to Boston at http://www.testyourvoip.com/ and get a score? Any warning messages?

On the router, you can try setting Security->Firewall Protection to Disable, or try the slightly newer 1.01.22 firmware. If no luck, do a test with your laptop connected directly to the cable modem. I suppose you'll have to do this after hours or on a weekend. Verify that your Internet access works without the router, then plug in MJ. (You'll have to cycle power on the modem and reboot your PC, for this test and again when you reconnect the router.)

Well, I've done everything except connecting directly to the cable modem. That is, I upgraded the firmware, and turned off the firewall. (I could bump everyone off line long enough to do that but I'd get tarred and feathered if I kept them off longer!) Same results. I'll try connecting directly to the modem sometime this week.

I appreciate the help! I mainly use this at home but I do travel occasionally and would like to use it at other locations.

Thanx again!
