Got my MagicJack !

Post by Xen1969 »

It took 6 days but I got my MagicJack!

The MagicJack weighs *nothing*. I did have a bit of trouble getting it to plug into my USB. A tad too tight. That packaging the MagicJack comes in sucks. I should post a picture of what it looks like post-stabbing.

So far so good... I can make calls, receive calls, got my voicemail set up.

Sometimes the audio quality seems to "drop off" for just a second or three (fades to nearly inaudible) but I suspect this is because I'm operating from a wireless PCI adapter (Linksys WMP54G) whose signal strength varies at times. I might need to get a Super Cantenna (www.cantenna.com) to peg the signal strength to the max.

Some other questions:

1) Is it me or does the softphone call log not indicate whether a call was incoming or outgoing?

2) I'm really confused about the function of the VMAIL button on the softphone. What is it supposed to be doing? I press it and nothing happens but it appears to think I'm making a call? I thought this was to check voicemail? and what is the LED supposed to do on the VMAIL button? I assumed this was to indicate you have voicemail waiting, but I left myself a voicemail and despite waiting 20 minutes I've yet to see this light up?

3) Being able to change the number of rings before going to voicemail would be a great feature. It appears it is set at 4 rings right now.

4) I'll have to play with it more today but in my testing last night there appeared to be an extended "quiet period" of a few second between when the phone stops ringing and when voicemail kicks in. Some people calling and planning to leave a message might hang up thinking they lost the connection. I started to wonder what happened when it kicked in.

Appreciate any comments on any of these and thanks to everyone who has offered their help to me -- MagicHack, kumar, damwill, anyone else I'm forgetting.

I'll continue to post my experience in this thread as events justify.

Thanks to katan_bartak for answering one of my questions. I see those now.

Following up on one of my own questions:

David in tech chat just told me the little "LED" on the VMAIL button on the softphone currently has no function but that it may eventually be used to indicate that you have messages waiting.

I've also since left voicemail messages for myself in which there was no extended "quiet period" as I described it, so I don't know what was up with that.

I did tell David of another thing I hope MagicJack can fix in time. By my testing you can leave a two minute voicemail message. You can leave a longer message (keep talking) but the recording gets cut after two minutes -- with no way (beep or something) for the person leaving the message to know any different. I suspect 2 minutes is fine for 95% of us but thought I would point this out.

So far so good really... some sporadic mild echoing on some calls but I'm willing to put up with it for the price I'm paying.

For the record if it helps anyone, I'm using a 800 Mhz Pentium III with 512 megabytes of RAM via wireless PCI adapter (Linksys WMP54G).

I've never really paid any attention to it.

Wonder how long that's going to take to be implemented?

Never thought about it but that's a really good idea! I would prefer 6 rings as I tend to be lazy and take my time answering calls.
