Use magicjack for anouther sip provider say asterisk ext

Post by joecanadian »

I have successfully like most of you managed to get off the magicjack and on to something more stable.

I run my own phone server and it would be nice to reuse this usless box and do something productive with it.. say go to my moms and plug it into her windows computer and have it connect to my phone server. or use it for anouther provider something like that.

It would be nice to setup some software and use it to communicate to the phone.. so that someone could use it when they want..

just seems a waste of some hardware

I mean for temporary use once in a while it makes a decent working device.

any ideas or simular devices out there that the software would work with that anyone knows of?

Actually I would like to install Skype on it so that it automatically started and could still use the phone plug. Magicjack is OK. In its current form, it is not really ready for prime time.

I figured the hardware would work with something cause its a common device.

Now I have my assumptions...

One that most chip sets or board designs are used in other products. I mean no one spends that much time designing something then just thats it.!@#?. its probably under other names..

I am a avid Linux user , (why use unstable buggy, controlled / monitored Microsoft software!)

and with a few commands I could clearly see that my 2.6 kernel supports this device already out of the box

# cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [V8237 ]: VIA8237 - VIA 8237 VIA 8237 with VIA1618 at 0xe400, irq 11
1 [U0x6e60xc31c ]: USB-Audio - USB Device 0x6e6:0xc31c USB Device 0x6e6:0xc31c at usb-0000:00:10.2-1.2, full speed
# lsusb
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 003 Device 021: ID 06e6:c31c Tiger Jet Network, Inc.
Bus 003 Device 020: ID 1307:1169
Bus 003 Device 019: ID 1307:0169
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

so I did some scanning..
found a few projects USB B2K for Linux seems to be one of the few projects quite close to this device..

curious if https://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/usbb2k-api/ project will work with this device with some slight modifications or any for that matter

Becuase in Ekiga and skype I can set the usb adaptor to be the in /out for sound..

now it works but It will not ring, nor let me dial.. or hang up for that matter but it will allow people to hear me and me hear them.. (glorified speaker and mic via USB)

But thats great... it means its useful if the b2k api is similar enough then I might get hangup and dtmf (touchtones) and control to the actual phone..

Worst case the device is a 30GB usb hard drive so you get something for your monies..

Might wanna keep a bkup of your stuff in case they do updates that change everything..

good thing is it does not touch or effect operations when used in windows.. it just uses the hardware.. nothing loaded from the unit or written to it when used in Linux..

# uname -r
2.6.21.3-slh-smp-4
running Debian (if your wondering!)

Nice to know
reply if you find anything else or actually try this.. I might in the Commercial holidays..
