OK so I've tried almost everything (1 more thing to try) with my MagicJack.
I have had nothing but trouble with this thing - in terms of quality.
Can I cancel my MJ subscription and get a partial refund?
I have 1.5 years left (ordered the optional 2nd year add-on with the unit).
Or I guess I can just sell the units and offer to get a new number (for free, since they allow 1 number change for free).
I'm just insanely frustrated with the quality of VOIP in general.
I've tried:
Packet8
Vonage
BroadVoice
MagicJack
Yes, it can be Charter, my ISP - but I have no other alternatives.
Thoughts?
My only thing left is to try to get it to work with the HP t5710 thinclient that I just got.
up until now, I've tried everything - had it on a dedicated dual-core PC (overkill), with and without QoS on the router, etc.
Can I cancel? Get a partial refund? Sell the units?

Your IP address shows your post as coming from your workplace. If you posted from home, you have a VPN up. If your VoIP is going through the VPN (which it would unless you took special measures to avoid it), that would explain your quality problems.
If that's not your issue, test to Boston at http://www.testyourvoip.com/ . Post the details, and also describe the specific quality problems you are having, e.g. choppy outbound voice, low volume, noise, distortion, dropped calls, unreliable call setup, etc.

Earlier - yes, I posted from my workplace (and I know that MJ does not work from work).Stewart wrote:Your IP address shows your post as coming from your workplace. Now - I am posting from home.

Here are my results of testyourvoip to Boston:

Your results look great. (They might be worse earlier in the evening (when your ISP's traffic is likely higher) or when you have other traffic on your LAN.)
Is your MJ quality always poor, or only occasionally? What are the specific problems? What problems did you have with Vonage or other providers? What ATA devices do you still have? Are any of them unlocked? What kind of router do you have?

Our issue with MJ quality has been usually outbound-related and happens about 90% of the time. Very choppy, and lots of echo, for the outbound user (he/she hears small parts of her own echo when he/she speaks, and the voice from the MJ user is often choppy; also sounds like it's half-duplex, as anytime the outbound user is speaking, the MJ user's voice cannot be heard). The inbound (phone in the MJ house) usually sounds fine.Stewart wrote:Your results look great. Almost every VOIP provider service I used had some level of choppiness or dropouts. So far, though, MJ's outbound has been the worst of them all.
With Packet8, I had their normal standalone ATA.
With Vonage, I intentionally got their wireless-router to eliminate issues based on the LAN (wanted the ATA functionality as far outward as possible).
With Broadvoice, I used a BYOD SPA2102 - even had it configured to be outside of my main Router (WRT54G v4 with DD-WRT firmware)
With MJ, I'm still using my WRT54G v4 (with DD-WRT firmware) and have the QoS to set the PC's MAC address as Premium and sip service as Premium. The PC is a dedicated dual-core system.
I hope that you still have the SPA-2102. We can configure it for your MJ account for a test. I would expect that to cure the echo heard by the remote party, and greatly improve doubletalk performance. It may or may not help the outbound choppiness. You can also set it up for a service such as Yahoo! Voice. IMO Yahoo! has the best technical quality of any VoIP service. For initial testing, you can call toll-free numbers without a Phone Out account. IMO, if your outbound voice is choppy on Yahoo, with only the SPA connected to your modem, then there is a problem with your Internet connection. It may not have shown up at testyourvoip.com, if the interval between loss periods is sometimes greater than the test length of 15 seconds.
