Minor issues, primarily getting phones to ring

Post by zowiehowie17 »

My magicjack arrived yesterday and seems to be working well with the exception of the phone actually ringing

I have the Magicjack plugged into one of my telephone wall connections, which gives me dial tones on each phone in the house. The issue I am running into relates to sound. None of the phones in the will ring AND when a call comes in; the softphone displays that a call is coming in, but does not make any sound.

I took a splitter, plugged that into the Magicjack, with one phone cord going from the splitter to the wall, and the other going to a phone. I'm not getting any ring from that phone.

On the computer end, I went into control panels > sound and audio devices > and clicked the voice tab. I set both the voice playback and voice recording to USB Internet Phone by Tigerjet. I'm still not getting any sound.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the phones to ring? Thanks in advance!

Plug the phone directly into MagicJack. Do not connect MJ to your phone company's jack.

IF you are going to attempt to use the MJ (or any similar device, Xlink, VOIP box, etc) to drive house phones via house wiring, you MUST MUST disconnect the house wiring from the encumbent landline service at the demarc point EVEN IF you have canceled the landline service and no longer get a landline dialtone. You still MUST disconnect the house wiring from the incoming POTS network at the demarc point.

If you don't understand what this means, you can go to, for example, the Vonage website and read their instructions on how to do this:

http://www.vonage.com/help.php?article= ... 06010001W1

(just look up Vonage, Help, Installation, House Wiring)

Even if you do this, the MJ may or may not have enough power (RE ringer equivalents) to drive all the house phones, depending on the RE ratings of all the phones combine. The best is to use cordless/electronic phones with REs around 0.1. The worse is old style MaBell phones (non-electronic), which had REs of 1.0.
