Freeze @ bios startup: Initializing USB Controllers *VISTA*
if i have MagicJack plugged in a usb port, the computer freezes in the bios screen on startup @ "Initializing USB Controllers".
if i unplug it and reset it, boots up perfectly.
Motherboard is an Asus P5B, bios build 1604.
any ideas???
thanks.

change bios boot settings
Check your boot options in the BIOS. It sounds like it is configured to boot off a USB device before the hard drive. you can either disable booting from USB device or move it down in the boot order

With the MJ unplugged, start computer. then plug in the MJ. Does the MJ startup and function?
Any luck locating a bios upgrade from ASUS?
yes, blue light comes on when the computer starts to boot if it's plugged in (but bios quickly freezes up @ 'Initializing USB Controllers'.
what is odd, is that when i FIRST got it and nothing was installed, it did not freeze up when it was plugged in and turned on. i believe it was only after i ran the vista 'upgrade' file (so the software loads in vista automatically)
OldNuc: where are you in SW iowa??

So, you think the problem is related to the Vista upgrade when running on XP. Interesting as that upgrade was the fix for some other XP problems and actually solved problems. Have you used this MJ on a Vista box?
I am at N 41 degrees 30.53 minutes W 95 degrees 52.11 minuites
Have you received the latest upgrade? Yesterday or today when you statup the MJ? For some reason, the Vista upgrade does not want to play with your BIOS. For what ever reason the MJ has decided that it will no longer respond to the initialization query from BIOS. This sounds like a MJ problem until you remember who wrote VISTA..... A couple of things to try. Plug MJ into the primary motherboard port. Plug MJ into a secondary motherboard port. Try a powered hub.though wrote:I AM ON VISTA.
oldnuc: a town/city would be ok.
I am out in the middle of nowhere, 3.5 miles south of Missouri valley, slightly east of Loveland.

I had the same problem
I just changed the boot order so the hard drive loaded first. Autoload does not work with my vista system, so I have to manually initialize MJ. Problem if the compuuter reboots and you are not there your MJ will not function.
That sounds like a Vista feature.....though wrote:i fixed mine by plugging it directly into a usb port on the mb. vista finds it and installs it as a 'usb controller'. i believe the monitor is found as a 'usb controller' as well, so you must not be able to plug a usb controller into a usb controller....

For some reason, in Vista the MJ is configured as a USB controller while in XP it is configured as a Mass Storage Device. If someone else who is running Vista would look into the device manager and post how their MJ is configured would add another data point for this question. You may have stumbled onto a problem. The only Vista here is the view out of the windows....
Is that how it is identified in device manager under the Universal Serial Bus Controllers section? If so then ther is a discontinuity between what you are seeing and what the OP is seeing. Not surprising considering the source of the OS. I am beginning to think that Vista is the upgraded ME...msiam wrote:It is "YMAX MagicJack USB Device" Device type : Disk drives Location: on Mass Storage Device.. I am Vista!!
