Error 3 - MJ won't work when network connection is switched
A couple of weeks ago, I setup MJ on a wireless connection from my laptop without issue. Everything worked fine with the wireless connection for a couple weeks, except for the occasional dropout.
Anyhow, I decided to try MJ with a hardwired ethernet connection, so I disabled the wireless connection and plugged in the ethernet cable. Everything worked fine.
Once I had finished my testing, I enabled the wireless connection and unplugged the ethernet cable.
Now, magic jack won't connect. I get "Please connect to the Internet [error 3]" showing up in the display window. The adds load into the left window, but it won't initialize.
I've been trying everything I can think of for the past several days. Un-plugging, re-installing, disabling/enabling, magicfix, etc.
Nothing has worked.
The only way I can get MJ to work is to plug in the ethernet cable. It just won't see that there's a network connection via the wireless.
Any suggestions?

Ok, let me clarify this situation. I only use the laptop in question (as I am now). I typically use it with the wireless connection (as I am now). Occationally I use it at my desk in a docking station with a network connection, or I'll plug directly into the laptop from the switch. The latter situation is only for high speed data transfer to the NAS or other testing purposes.
Right now, as I was in previous posts, I sit her with the laptop on my lap, in the sunroom (beautiful sunrise this morning), with a wireless connection, browsing and posting on the forum.
It is appearantly working fine. I can release and renew my IP address without issue and I can browse the web and I can see and browse the NAS and other computers on the network and they can see me.
But still, MJ will not initialize until I plug in the ethernet cable.

This all seems strange. First, are you sure that you're on the right wireless network? You might have a neighbor with an open system (but a router not compatible with MJ). At a command prompt, do an to confirm that the Ethernet interface is showing 'media disconnected' and that there is not some third interface that MJ might be trying to use. You could try disabling the Ethernet interface in Device Manager and restarting MJ; perhaps that will convince it to choose wireless. You might have two or more firewalls cascaded; e.g. you installed a third-party package but left Windows Firewall turned on. If all else fails, try running Wireshark on the wireless interface and see what traffic, if any, is going to or from the MJ servers. Note that you must turn off Promiscuous Mode to capture packets on most wireless interfaces.
Code: Select all
ipconfig /all
Same [error 3] issue here, but it doesn't appear to be a system or config issue.
It looks to me like a server registration issue on MJ's side since double clicking prompts for login email and password, starts server registration, then bumps back out to "Please connect to the internet then double click here [error 3].
I sent off an email for tech support, and my guess, but haven't heard anything back. Anyone else?

Again, I'm certain that this isn't a wireless configuation issue. I know for sure that I'm on my own network since I can see the rest of the local networked devices like my printer, NAS, router and other workstations.
I have the ethernet adapter disabled, renewed my wireless IP lease and plugged/un-plugged MJ many times. I also completely shut down the laptop when I'm not using it so it has been robooted coutless times since the issue started.
Anyhow, I did the wireshark capture and noticed multiple ARP requests for "Who has 192.168.2.102?", which is the address that is typically assigned via DHCP to my ethernet adapter. So I manually assigned that address to my wireless adapter and MJ imediately recognised the connection.
When I switched back to DHCP and was assigned my usuall 192.168.2.100 network IP, MJ showed error 3 and the ARP query "Who has 192.168.2.102? Tell 192.168.2.1" began to show up again.
All of the http requests from MJ have complete fine. The adds continue to load and update in the left window, regardless of the wireless IP.
Does this give anyone any clues?

Log into your router and verify that you don't have any ports forwarded to .102 . If not, then try this test: With MJ running on the Ethernet interface (and wireless connection confirmed down), shutdown MJ, unplug Ethernet cable, reboot router, bring up wireless connection, restart MJ. You may still have the trouble, but there should now be no reason for seeing ARPs for .102 . If they are still present, see if the capture shows any packets with a source IP of .102 .
If the above does not help, please post:
Make, model and version of router? Any special settings (forwarding, triggering, DMZ, SPI, SIP, ALG, gaming, etc.)?
Make, model and version of DSL modem, if physically separate?
DSL protocol PPPoE, PPPoA, routed, bridged, other?
If separate, is modem configured as a router? Connection from router to modem use PPPoE, DHCP, other?

Problem found. It appears to be an issue with the router, which is an older (but usually rock solid) SMC7008. The access point is a seperate Cisco 1200 (also solid as a rock).
I swapped out the router with a spare and everthing worked normally. Going back to the SMC recreated the issue, even after a reboot. So I did a factory reset and reloaded the config file. Now all is working well.
Thank you to Stewart et el, for helping me to think.

I've never had any trouble with MJ connecting properly, just with low tx volume issues. No changes have been made to our hardware or software configs. This problem cropped up suddenly, and has been persistent.
All usual remedies have been tried, including a factory reset of our modem/router. I had the same results as Minoe when doing a wireshark capture, but unlike Minoe, the only way I can get MJ to connect is via a direct ethernet connection with wireless connections down. I DID notice a much longer load time when this issue first occurred. Is it possible an auto update occurred? So... MJ is no longer capable of negotiating within a LAN?
I overextended my two week RMA window in hopes Stewart's fix, with regard to the volume issue, would be resolved in fairly short order. Now this? lol
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Minoe,
Yes. I did, but with the same result as you. Once I switched back to DCHP IP's, which I require for our network, MJ reported the [error 3] code once again.
Most interesting to me is that for the past 3 weeks, MJ has been connected to the same machine, no system or configuration changes have been made, but it is now a persistent issue with MJ.

I have been having the error 3 problem today as well, and cannot make or receive calls. I chatted with 3 different techs, who could not solve this. The last suggestion was that I change my area code (it's now 203) He did say I would be charged $10 to thid tho... I am at my wits end with their customer service. My router is a linksys wrt54gs. Any help would be appreciated.
TMikk,
Try doing as I did. Save a config file from your router, do a resest with the reset button or from menu if it's an option. Then reload your config file.
Alternatively, if your network configuration is very basic, you can manually set up the router without the config file.
I can't seem to recreate the proplem on my end. I want to explore it a bit more.
