Help with T5700
I need a bit of help and didn't want to clutter up the thin client stickies with random help requests.
I got a T5700 off ebay for $52 (no power supply, I had one) 198/256. I installed the Trancend 512 flash and installed the latest XPe image from HP. The unit itself is working great, the problem is the MJ, if I plug it in it after the 5700 boots it fires up and works fine, but if I reboot the machine (after committing) it will not start, using either the default install or installing as a service. I also tried to install the java from the HP downloads section for it and it always fails, says my download is corrupt, so I can't run the MJ fix tool from the MJ website (that java install is apparently too large for my disk, didn't check it's size). Any ideas? I do IT for a living so feel free to get technical. Oh, I've also removed all the unnecessary software, only thing left is sygate, and it's currently disabled till I get this figured out.

Did you go into the bios settings and change the first boot device back to ATA instead of USB?Davejb wrote:I need a bit of help and didn't want to clutter up the thin client stickies with random help requests.

Of course (that may not have been clear in my post, it's the MJ app that's not starting, not the 5700)VaHam wrote:Did you go into the bios settings and change the first boot device back to ATA instead of USB?Davejb wrote:I need a bit of help and didn't want to clutter up the thin client stickies with random help requests.

Dave,
I don't know why your auto boot is not working, maybe you clobbered something in all your attempts to do this ant that. I would suggest a clean install of the newest OS (which should bring your 5700 up to SP2) I would also upgrade the bios and remove Sygate, that little beast is not as disabled as you might think when you select disabled.

For JAVA you are using the one from the HP thin client update site? I wouldn't try to use anything else and if you pull the one for XPe from the Sun site you will find that it has a time out and then you have to buy it and it ain't cheap.
OK now to install Java all you have to do is change in the environment variables Temp and Tmp from point to the Z drive. Create the same folder structure on you Thumb Drive that the to temp directors are path-ed to, then change the path in the environment variable from Z:\Administrator\whatever to D:\Administrator\whatever (D being the drive letter of your thumb drive with plenty of unused space). Do a commit and then install the two part JAVA package from HP. When that is complete change the D back to Z in the environment variables do a commit and you will be good to go.
The two part JAVA install wants to you Z drive for it temp files and it is not big enough so you point it to your Thumb drive where there is plenty of room. Once installed don't forget to put it back to Z or you will have all kinds of weird things happen. This is actually a strategy from HP only they have you point it back at your thin client server - which I don't happen to have.
PS - One draw back with the 5700 is that it only has 1.1 USB ports and a lot of things get touch about that including the system warning you that it would work better if you used 2.0 USB HUBs. The good news if you get it set up clean and the last thing you install is MJ and do and immediate commit the problem goes away. Unless Murphy is a personal friend of yours.

Way ahead of you on a couple things, already re imaged it, removed all the fluff software, same results, MJ won't always start. It is the java installer from HP, nice trick on the temp file relocation, should have thought of that!HolmanGT wrote:Dave,

Davejb,
I know you have already done this but on the off chance that you haven't I will say it anyway. You have gone into the bios and disabled everything but the ATAFlash for bootup.
I have ATAFlash as a boot device and everything else disabled. i.e. boot 1 ata, boot 2 disabled, boot 3 disabled.
Mine have worked so it can be done. the only one that has ever given me any flack was one yesterday and it didn't even like my 2.0 USB Thumb drives and I would have to argue with it to get it to recognize them. It had a manufacture date of 2003. The reason I mention the MFG date is I don't remember previous 5700s giving me as much is any trouble as the one yesterday. I never paid attention to the Mfg. date before so I can't say if they were newer units or not.
Until just recently I had not noticed that the 5700s were USB 1.1 HUBS and for that reason if some one wants one from me they are going to have to do some fancy begging. I just don't think it is worth the money you save to step that far back in time. USB 1 "Give me a break". Even my cigarette lighter is USB 2.0.

Did the Java install correctly? You can also install the stock Java 1.6 rev 4 from Sun's website since you have the space for it. Providing your temp files are directed to your USB flash drive or your RAM drive is pushed up enough to handle it.
Also, did you look in the device manager and make sure there aren't any devices with a yellow exclamation point by them?

In addition to what stroths is saying on the boot thing, humor me try it. It only takes a few minutes and like I said I don't know what I did to suddenly get my 5700 working the other day but working it is!Davejb wrote:I don't see how the boot order could affect the MJ app loading when Windows starts, I do have ATA set to first as it won't boot with the MJ plugged in if USB is first.

No it didn't, I used a thumb drive with a bit over 1GB or free space, it goes through the first part of extracting, when I click ok after that it says my download was corrupt.stroths wrote:Did the Java install correctly? Device manager is clean. I did a total of 5 reboots today, 3 times MJ started fine, 2 it didn't.

I used Java 6 and installed from the full redistributable (offline) installer. HERE is a link to the full offline copy of JRE 6 update 6. It's about a 15mb download.
You might try what I did and push your ramdisk up to 64mb using the utility in the control panel. I didn't have any issues installing with that config.

Ok, that did it, at least now I can run the MJ fix and see if that will straighten it out.stroths wrote:I used Java 6 and installed from the full redistributable (offline) installer. HERE is a link to the full offline copy of JRE 6 update 6. It's about a 15mb download.
