I am ready to give up on magicjack

Post by jamz1074 »

My Magicjack worked great for the first month, then after my free month ran out and I couldn't return it everything went downhill!
My caller ID dont display on my phone anymore, I have to grab the phone and run to the computer and see who is calling. When someone calls they hear me but I can not hear them I have to say I will call you back. When I am talking to someone they sometimes sound like a computer that is stuck, their sentence repeats. I am wondering if it is my windows vista?! I have been having problems with it too since I hooked up the magicjack. Anyone else having these problems? How can I fix them?

If MJ worked for the first month, were there any changes made to your computer that might have caused the problem - new software installed, hardware, updates of some kind?

Think about this: ANY something different that you may have done.
I made the mistake of doing to much updating and deleting of programs; this system used to be a sony, that I also lost my MJ. Can you use your system restore to get back to where your MJ works. Each change you make test, test test before doing more, so you know that the change you make is OK.

Please tell me you didn't install the new XP Service Pack 3 !?!?!

That service pack has been wrecking havoc everywhere.
It's been awhile since I've been on the forum but have people been having issues with SP3?
I wouldn't be surprised.

I havent done anything different to my computer, it started acting like that so I actually restored my computer back to original factory settings thinking it would fix anything and its still doing it! I honestly think its Windows Vista! My computer is constantly freezing, I cant do anything with it and there are no viruses I have ran the Norton Antivirus and everything is fine! I just don't know, I will try hooking up my Windows XP and see if that helps out! If not I quit! I thought this magicjack was the greatest thing then it started acting up now i feel like an ass for telling everyone how great it was! LOL!

I'm sure it's Vista. Mine does the same thing until I clean out all of the upgrades Vista does. After that, everything goes back to normal. It's a true pain the butt.
Windows Vista and Laptop with XP SP2 on the road. Occasionally, a Mac if my Windows machine isn't working.

While I do not use Vista; Windows XP Home, what's left from my old Sony parts, I am glad that I did not go to Vista. Who, in this forum says; "wait a year before using SP3" and with good cause. But don't feel like an @ss about MJ; it's more a Vista problem from reading your post. I tell about MJ but also say it may not be for the faint of heart. Like anything that you connect to your system; all may not go as the instructions say.
Good Luck.

SP 3

Post by g2lenn »

I keep reading posts in various news groups about xp with sp3. I have two machines running xp with the sp 3 upgrade and everything is good including magicjack. I have read that there is a problem with sp 3 in amd machines using norton anti virus.

SP3 was working fine, but then the calls would get choppy sometimes. Their "fix" at least cleared that up. No problems with it at all now! If it helps, I use Avast antivirus and Comdo firewall.

I wouldn't be surprised.
Microsoft has a long history of Service Pack Havoc beginning with the very first service pack that MS had ever released. I remember the first time that I had seen a service pack label as a "release candidate", I chuckled and thought that it should more appropriately be labeled "sucker candidate"

SP3 ? Heck even Magic Jack doesn't know Jack

Post by mutedmajority »

Whoever the programmers were for this thing need fired immediately. Why would anyone want their phone to pop up on their computer screen every few minutes? Love that fricking splash screen that makes my computer take 4 minutes just so I can see behind it. Tell your friends it said.... I'm telling everybody what a piece of shit this is. I have two of them. Surprised my dud started working again with a powered USB hub. I would never have this junk as an only phone. Heck, mine didn't work long enough for me to memorize the (TEN DIGIT) number.

Can they think of any way to make this thing suck more? Maybe they should add a blindingly bright LED on it. That would do it.

I heard that they are going to add an MOTD splash screen featuring Dan B. and various members of his family. The plan is to have the new splash screen appear every ten minutes with a new tip for using the MJ along with the daily words of wisdom from Dan himself.

LMFAO!
Thats funny.
Well, MagicBlock fixed my problem with the pop up.
Wish I could get rid of the splash screen, but its not really a big deal. Of course, I could just run it as a service.
And I actually like the blue light, it lets me know it's at least receiving power. It would be pretty hard to troubleshoot otherwise. And I don't really notice it.
And my magicjack has worked perfect, just had to tweak it thanks to the help of this fourm.
I enjoy a project, and honestly, what did you expect for 20/yr?

I HOPE you are kidding. That would be super annoying as hell. If that does happen, just rename the big.skn and small.skn files and say bye-bye to the pretty softphone and all that irritating crap. I haven't figured out how the contacts are stored but that's not a major setback for me.

I was really pissed when I couldn't get a "live" person by clicking on the link on their site that says "customer care/live person" when i first got the device and had some question. Nowhere was there any way to get some f***ing help. They also lied about how long the offer was going to last and how many more units were available. Scheisty bastards.

I smell vaporware, i hope I"m wrong. I just can't help but wonder what is in development right now. Don't buy too many years of service...

AHHHH, Norton Antivirus....even if you hack it and get it for free, it's no good, and a big user of memory.....check your Task Manager and see what else is running, and how much of your CPU you are using. MagicJack works best without a lot of compatition. We had a similar problem, switched to Avast anti virus, no problems yet.

I was about to suggest that Norton was your problem and not Vista...

Do you know that they were sued because they stuck a folder on your computer that there is no way of accessing? Hackers kept trying to crack into the folder just to see what was in there--and most of them couldn't do it. Norton is, quite possibly, the worst Anti-Virus software out there--hogs your resources, doesn't find viruses, and causes all sorts of glitches. It's what we refer to as "Bloatware"

My MagicJack works just fine on my Vista Ultimate machine--and I've had exactly ZERO problems with Vista (except when I tried to get MJ to run as a service--it didn't crash, it just didn't really work). My Vista computer hasn't crashed once since I put it together a year or so ago, and it's used every single day. A lot of people complain about Vista--but a lot of people complained about XP when it first came out too. Now no one wants to switch. I like it, personally, but I do have a pretty powerful system running it, which makes a difference.

I have SP3 on my XP laptop, and MJ works fine on it, and so does the rest of my system. :-)

This is going to sound stupid, but I was changing around some network settings on my PC at home and I got some of the problems you're talking about (i.e. the voice out was working fine, but voice in was not) and all I did was unplug the MJ, wait a few seconds, and plug it back in. Now it works fine again. So--the stupid part--did you try that? :-)
