MJ has been reliable since (with a few network exceptions) late July, 2007. Now all I get is the "Warning you must plug MagicJack into a USB port" for the last couple of days.
System status:
New Abit P35 motherboard
New Seagate 250 GB SATA HD
Note: MagicJack worked for about a week with this setup after the installation of WinXP Pro SP3 with no problems. Just boot the machine, MJ starts. Shutdown the machine and MJ stops. Call quality good when MJ up.
This was after cloning the previous PATA disk to the SATA disk with Acronis TI 11.
Thinking that perhaps SP3 was the culprit, I put the MJ on a machine with XP Pro SP2 that had previously worked. Same result as first paragraph above.
My Computer dialog shows an entry for MagicJack on a CD-Drive of about 1.5MB and a removable disk of about 24 MB but blank, i.e., no content no Lable.
I have tried MajicFix with all Green check marks except for the last one which indicates that MJ cannot talk to the servers.
Next down the line was the mjsetup. No changes were warranted
Tried the last line of redemption on the read me list about "Warning...." and it does not load, just the X in the upper left hand corner. I've updated all the Java stuff so that's a puzzle except that if the server/magicjack can't communicate then it can't fix anything.
The few problems I've had I've been able to overcome but this one and the steps I've taken lead me to believe that "my Jack is broke!"
Helpful contributions will be appreciated to solve my mystery Jack.

Have you tried reformatting the removable disk? If you can't get that part to work, starting magicJack.exe from a properly crafted shortcut should make the pseudo CD and USB disk unnecessary. Target something like Note: the above is all one line.
Code: Select all
"C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Application Data\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe" /foreground /scf _magicJackPersonalDataRoot "C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Application Data\mjusbsp\magicJack"
Thank YOU Stewart! That did the trick. Don't know why it works but it does and is now archived in my Hints folder!Stewart wrote:Have you tried reformatting the removable disk? You Sir are a gentleman and a scholar!
OK, you're still a gentleman and a scholar, but...while I can use the above (altered to fit my settings) and I can send and receive calls, something is still missing. For example, the "removable drive" still shows without the normal majicjack(vista) title and is not formatable nor even openable. I tried, while the softphone was on screen, to run the MJFix and show still no communication to MJ servers. Upgrade did not work either. Seems maybe I have permissions problem that I need to workout.TOF wrote:Thank YOU Stewart! That did the trick. Again, Thank You!
Normally, MJ keeps your contact list and some other stuff on its USB drive, so the data is available when you move the MJ from one PC to another. The workaround suggested puts it on the hard drive instead. Also, running magicJack.exe directly bypasses automatic software updates; if possible, it's worthwhile to make the drive work. Have you tried this: http://www.magicjack.com/site/downloads ... _setup.exe ? If no luck, try the MJ in another PC to see if it really is corrupted (disable autorun if you don't want to install the software there). Sorry, I don't know why you can't format it; my knowledge of that area of Windows is very limited.
I've always kept a copy of my contact list on a separate partition so it can be reloaded easily. But in order for that to work I need access to the now "Removable Disk" and that is not available and cannot be formatted. Mj-setup only indicates that all is well with MJ so it can't fix anything. Catch 22.Stewart wrote:Normally, MJ keeps your contact list and some other stuff on its USB drive, so the data is available when you move the MJ from one PC to another. So for now, I'll keep using your fix to obtain phone service until I can convince myself that somehow I've corrupted the device to an uncorrectable state. I'm going to try poking around in the autostart features and the registry to see if anything jumps out at me. If I find the culprit to be other than complete corruption I'll post it here.
Thanks for your help!
My Jack keeps warning me! -the FIX
I kept trying to format the "Removable Disk" entity from the command line using Format, etc with no success.
Went to Disk Manager in XP administrative tools and forced a New Volume creation and format as FAT.
Then when restarted with Autorun, all started up normally. I did the upgrade.exe, copied my Addressbook.xml to the partition and now have normal lables and address listing.
The problem most likely started when I did some copying and deleting sometime after installtion of the new SATA HD.
