minimum system to run MJ

Post by MrUmunhum »

Until MJ is supported under Linux, what is the smallest system that is required to run MJ?
Is USB 2.0 required?
What will XP require in CPU and Memory?? Can XP be run from a Flash Disk?
Would this SBC work? : https://www.soekris.com/shop/product_in ... cts_id=135
It only has 266 CPU and 256Meg, USB 1.1. They do run well from batteries.

Well I'm running MJ on a PII 300Mhz laptop with 128MB RAM. Occasionally the sound is a little choppy, but I think that is mostly not enough memory, so the OS is swapping. With 256MB you should be in good shape...

Do you know what your CPU usage is and what is your swapping rate is?

Some time ago I had it working on a P2 233mHz, 64MB mem, 4G UW scsi running Bart PE derived from Win 5.2 (Server 2003). The same platform did not work however with Bart PE derived from Win 5.1 (XP). The USB on this platform of course is USB 1.1.

This setup worked with very good voice quality. It is worth mentioning that my network adapter, while as much an antique as the rest of this setup, is a high-end hardware piece relative to it's host hardware. Keep in mind that with the slower CPU and related bus that network latency tends to be much higher than compared to modern hardware. Swapping should not be an issue unless you are running other apps active in the foreground.

Bart PE allegedly will run from a USB stick I'm told. I would not expect good performance on a USB 1.1 host.
