virtual machines and magic jack??

Post by decadude »

ok i am currently using just a cell phone right now.

i will definitely keep my cell phone around and not alter my plan what so ever for a while only due to the mixed reviews of the magic jack

the cool thing is i know the technology exist and being in the IT industry for years more times often than not technology improves in time. same is true today when you buy the first version of a gaming console that is new and hits the market its best not to buy the first version or release b/c there is more times often than not bugs. <--- i am using this analogy and i am not even a gamer, lol

i am primarily into coding and it security and use just linux but i read where this device currently isnt supported under linux so i guess ill have either bust out my hardcore computer skills and get this thing working under linux myself or use a vmware to get this thing up and running strong.

i cant wait to play around with this device...

has anyone tested magic jack in vmware or perhaps virtual pc or something similar??
worse case senario is i have some older laptops i can dust off that have windows xp sp2 installed as i also read odd things going on with sp3 with the magic jack device.

also sorry for the long post i know if your reading this your falling asleep probably.

Does Vmware support usb devices? If not it won't work.
MS VirtualPc and VirtualServer won't work for the same reason.

I have a co-worker that installed vmware ESX on a server using a USB-attached CD drive and then installed windows on it using the same drive. I assume that this mean that vmware supports USB devices.

Linux Ubuntu Vmware XP

Post by djg5211 »

Hi All...

I am currently using MJ in the following fashion:

VMWare Server 1.0.6
HOST - Ubuntu Hardy Heron (with the most current updates)
GUEST OS - Windows XP Home Edition (SP3 and current updates)

It works fine but... in this version of Ubuntu use the VMWARE SERVER INSTALL SCRIPT
(google the script and you'll find it...) as it has it install everything you
need. Perhaps with slight modification it might work on other Linux Distros.

Now, so far the only problems (sorta) that i am having are:

1. USB params not getting passed to VM so if i reboot i have
to restart the Guest OS and then UNPLUG MJ and PLUG
it back in and THEN MJ starts.

2. Figuring out how to AUTO LOGIN to VMWare Server.

If i could get these two things figgered out then i could reboot
the HOST and everything would just fire back up.

Thoughts or ideas Anyone?

Cheers!
Dave

Works great in VMware (Server 1.0.6) XP Guest / Ubuntu 7.10 Host.

The one problem I had, I finally solved here
