HP T5710 & majicJack - no dial tone using a Telephone

Post by mozerd »

I recently acquired the T5710 TC 800Mhz 256/256 from ebay [$60 + $26 for shipping to Canada] - after re-flashing the OS and removing all the unneeded applications majicJack installed. The soft-phone works great with the headphone and microphone combination but if I use a handset telephone there is no dial-tone. If I use the majicJack plugged into my desktop computer or laptop computer the handset telephone works without problems.

BTW, on the TC I had to back-out of the upgrade using Stewart's fix -- so I am using the pre-upgrade majicJack install file on the TC. On my Desktop computer as well as the Laptop the latest upgrade works just fine for me regardless of which audio device is being used.

My question -- on the TC -- how to get a dial-tone when using a Telephone. Do I need to install Tiger-Jet drivers and if so how do I get those drivers?

No Dial tone via Handset problem solved

Post by mozerd »

Using unconventional means - I downloaded the drivers from Tiger Jet -- specifically the USB Internet Phone by Tiger Jet -- after which my Telephone handset dial-tone now works via the Thin Client.

What i do not understand is why the MJ installation does not install the USB Internet Phone by Tiger Jet driver[s] automatically if it senses that its not present. Anyway this now work with my TC.

The MJ installation (on a Win XP workstation) does not install any drivers. The MJ hardware looks like (among other things) a USB sound card; its drivers (the files are Microsoft files included with the Windows distribution) should be installed automatically by the 'new hardware' logic in the OS. If you take an XP PC that has never had MJ installed, disable autorun, and insert the MJ device, the USB Internet Phone device should appear, and you can e.g. speak into the phone and record your voice with Sound Recorder, play the recording back through the phone, etc.

There is evidently something different on your TC that prevented the new hardware from being automatically installed.

I have not as yet found out why the Windows Found New Hardware Wizard did not fire up when MJ was inserted in the TC ... perhaps I was too aggressive when I began deleting stuff off the TC to make room for the MJ install without comprehending all of the implications ... you're 100% correct in your commentary. Thanks.

"administrator" should have been "Administrator" -- note the capital -- for both login and password. Does that work?

Yep that did it, but I am still having the same issue.

Is it possible that the USB on this thinclient doesnt have enough power to make the phone work?

When someone calls it shows up on the MJ but it doesnt even make the phone ring or push the caller ID to the phone.

Making a outgoing call you can dial but again, cant hear or talk through the phone.

And I did copy over the USBAUDIO.sys file...

It wont let me select "telephone" in the MJ menu

After tinkering with it based on the results I found on the forum it didnt work so I went to MJ support again, here is the convo. STILL does not work. Someone help! lol

Eric: Hello, how may I help you?

ryan: Hi, I cant toggle my magicjack to use the phone. The radio button is there but it wont let me click it.

Eric: Please unplug the magicjack and plug it again after 2 minutes.

ryan: Tried that about 90 times

ryan: Also tried reinstalling it several times, upgrading, reinstalling drivers

ryan: Even reinstalled Windows...

Eric: We will try to uninstall the magicjack in Device Manager.

Eric: Right click the My Computer.

Eric: Then click the Hardware tab.

Eric: Then click Device Manager.

ryan: ok

Eric: In Device Manager, click the +Sound, Audio, and Game Controllers.

Eric: In +Sound, Audio, and Game Controllers, can you see there the YMAX Magicjack and the Tigerjet ?

ryan: no

ryan: its sound, video, and game controllers...

Eric: After you clicked the +Sound, Audio, and Game Controllers, what are the items you can see there ?

ryan: all my audio related stuff, but nothing magicjack or tigerjet

ryan: under "other devices" there is USB Phone by TigerJet

Eric: Please right click the USB Phone by TigerJet and click Uninstall.

ryan: k

ryan: uninstalled it

Eric: After that, please restart the magicjack.

Eric: And try to select the Telephone option again.

ryan: by unplugging it and plugging it back in?

Eric: Yes.

Eric: Unplug the magicjack and lug it again after 15 seconds.

ryan: ok left it unplugged for 30 seconds to be safe its starting up again

Eric: Let's see if you can now select the Telephone option.

ryan: nope, cant select it

ryan: it loaded up just like it was before

ryan: but also got a popup saying "cannot install this hardware"

ryan: but it is installed...

ryan: maybe not correctly...

Eric: May I know if the magicjack drives are still visible in Computer ?

ryan: the one I uninstalled is back exactly where it was before

Eric: Click Start > Computer.

ryan: ok

Eric: In Computer, what are the magicjack drives you can see there?

ryan: under my computer?

ryan: phone D:

ryan: MagicJack E:

Eric: We will try to Create a New Partition for the Phone D:

Eric: Right click the My Computer.

Eric: Then click Manage.

Eric: Then click Disk Management.

Eric: Let me know if you are now in Disk Management.

ryan: There is no "manage" under my computer?

Eric: Yes.

ryan: That might be a vista feature?

ryan: I am on XP

Eric: That can also be done in Windows XP.

Eric: When you right click the My Computer, is there a Manage option ?

ryan: no there isnt

ryan: open, explore, search

ryan: is there another way to get to disk management

Eric: Try to type the Disk Management on Run.

Eric: Click Start > Run.

ryan: What is the extention?

ryan: (ex: diskmanagement.exe ?)

Eric: That's the keyword for the Disk Management.

Eric: Please try to enter that on Run.

ryan: doesnt come up

ryan: just gets an error

ryan: and it wont run something with a space anyway so I also tried it without a space

Eric: Let me transfer you to our higher technical support with regards to this.

Eric: Thank you for your patience. I will transfer you to a higher level of support. Please hold while I transfer you.

ryan: ok

ryan: This is a different computer, my old computer is dead so I need to use this one. Its been ever since I switched

Michaela: Okay.

Michaela: Is your magicjack plugged in right now?

ryan: Yes

Michaela: Please unplug your magicJack then plug it back after 2 minutes to other USB port.

ryan: Ive tried every usb port on the computer

ryan: I spent the last week troubleshooting it myself and read every online forum to no end

Michaela: I see.

ryan: http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/cann ... t1244.html

ryan: http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/no-s ... t6851.html

ryan: Google result brings up a lot of topics about this, and tried everything in those forums...

Michaela: Please right click on your My Computer, click on Manage.

Michaela: Please click Sounds and game controllers.

ryan: ok

Michaela: Do you see USB Internet Phone by TigerJet there?

ryan: no

Michaela: What option do you see there?

ryan: 6 things completely unrelated to Magicjack

ryan: USB Internet phone is in its own category

ryan: "other devices"

ryan: with a yellow "?" like its not working correctly

ryan: same thing I mentioned to Eric

Michaela: Do you see USB device there?

ryan: under sounds? No

Michaela: May I know what options so you see?

ryan: sure

ryan: they are:

ryan: Audio Codecs

ryan: Legacy Audio Drivers

ryan: Legacy Video Capture

ryan: Media Control Devices

ryan: VIA AC 97 Audio

ryan: Video Codecs

ryan: that is all

Michaela: I see.

Michaela: Do you see your dial pad there?

Michaela: I mean on your screen right now?

ryan: Yes, everything works great except the phone that is plugged into the Magicjack

ryan: and I have tried several phones

ryan: and its all because I cant toggle to "telephone"

ryan: something is not installed correctly

Michaela: Please click the “Menu” button on the softphone then “Volume/Headset Control” and check if you have properly toggled to Telephone or Headset.

ryan: with the drivers...

ryan: that is the entire problem

ryan: I cant toggle to telephone

ryan: it wont let me

ryan: the radio button is there but it wont let me click it.

Michaela: Are you using an extension USB cord?

ryan: No, but I did try the one that came with my Magicjack

ryan: and same result, nothing works

ryan: in the drop down field under volume/headset control there is nothing else other than my AC 97 Audio

ryan: which is my audio card (on board ) on my computer

ryan: So if there were a drop down for the phone, it would work

ryan: something is not installed correctly with the Tigerjet drivers

ryan: where can I get those drivers or install them correctly?

ryan: "Upgrade" does not work.

Michaela: Okay.

Michaela: One moment please...

ryan: k

Michaela: Do you have another computer?

ryan: Not to use magicjack with

Michaela: Why?

ryan: This is a brand new HP computer we are working with here. Purchased it 2 months ago and MJ has been stubborn

Michaela: Okay.

ryan: My other PC belongs to my work and its locked down tighter than a virgins skirt. Cant install my own stuff on it.

Michaela: Click on the Windows button (new "Start" button), then click on "Computer".

ryan: ok

ryan: you mean "my computer"?

Michaela: On the "Organize" menu, then click on "Folder and Search Options".

Michaela: Yes Ryan,

ryan: ok, ready

Michaela: On the "Organize" menu, then click on "Folder and Search Options".

ryan: theres no organize menu in the top toolbar? but i did click on folder?

Michaela: Yes please.

ryan: ok...

ryan: "files stored on this computer..."

Michaela: Click the "View" tab.

ryan: ok

Michaela: Under "Hidden files and folders", select "Show hidden files and folders".

ryan: ok

Michaela: Click "OK".

ryan: there was nothing hidden..

Michaela: Double-click on your hard drive (usually C:\).

ryan: ok

Michaela: Double-click on "Users" folder.

ryan: under documents and settings?

ryan: or the windows folder

ryan: ?

Michaela: Double-click on your folder name (this is your windows log in name).

ryan: Program Files, Documents and Settings, Windows are the only folders in C:

ryan: I am the admin of this computer, there are no "users"

Michaela: Click to open "Documents and Settings".

ryan: ok

Michaela: Double-click on your folder name (this is your windows log in name).

ryan: Administrator ... ok

Michaela: Good.

Michaela: Double-click on "AppData" folder.

ryan: Application Data folder, yes

Michaela: Double-click on "Roaming".

ryan: no such thing to click on

Michaela: Find and delete the folder named "mjusbsp".

ryan: found it, ~ 37 mb

ryan: you want the whole thing deleted?

Michaela: Find and delete the folder.

ryan: done

ryan: I had to unplug the magicjack to delete it

ryan: otherwise it kept saying "in use"

Michaela: Yes please.

ryan: its gone.

Michaela: Okay.

Michaela: One moment please...

ryan: ok

Michaela: Thank you.

ryan: no problem..

Michaela: Please plug it back now.

ryan: ok

Michaela: Do you see a dial pad now?

ryan: it says right away "cannot install this hardware"

ryan: then it starts to install...

ryan: its currently "downloading"

ryan: I see a green magicjack..

Michaela: Okay, wait for it.

ryan: I somehow doubt this will do the trick because even reformatting my computer and starting 1000% fresh didnt do it

Michaela: Just try it Ryan.

Michaela: I will do my best to help you.

ryan: yes i am doing everything you all say

ryan: magicjack is installed again

ryan: I see the dialpad

ryan: cannot toggle it still

Michaela: Thank you so much Ryan.

Michaela: Please click the link to download and run the magicJack upgrade (applicable for both XP & Vista):

Michaela: http://upgrades.magicjack.com/upgrade/upgrade.exe

Michaela: Please run the upgrade.

ryan: ok

ryan: downloaded the upgrade 7.32 mb

ryan: nothing has changed

Michaela: Would you allow me to refresh the setting of your magicjack account here in my end?

ryan: Im certain it has nothing to do with anything on your end

ryan: We need to get the file in the right place, or driver, whatever

ryan: Its still not in sound, video, gaming category like it should be

ryan: and if I click "update" in the "other" category it fails to find anything...

ryan: if I put the magicjack in my friends laptop it works just fine.

ryan: (toshiba)

ryan: and that laptop is OLD...

Michaela: Yes, let me refresh the magicjack setting here in my end since I have your phone number and account number of the magicjack.

ryan: Ok...

Michaela: Thank you Ryan.

Michaela: Please hold as I refresh and it may take some time to do this matter.

Michaela: One moment please...

ryan: ok

Michaela: Thank you for patiently waiting.

Michaela: I have successfully refreshed your magicJack number here in our end. Please unplug your magicJack then reboot your computer and router and also remove the power source from it. This should clear up your connection and give you clear audio quality. When your connection is back up try using the magicJack in a different USB port as well, then please place a call. If you're still having the same error then please chat us back immediately.

Michaela: Please make sure to unplug the magicjack so that changes will take effect and the dial pad will appear again.

Michaela: If the problem still persists please chat me back and ask for my name. Our chats will be saved automatically min our database.

Michaela: I hope that somehow I will be able to help you.

ryan: Its not going to fix it...

ryan: I work on computers for a living, lol

ryan: This is a issue with your drivers

ryan: Like I said if I put it in the Toshiba it works just fine, and the tigerjet is in the correct place.

ryan: So how do we get it there on this HP?

Michaela: Yes, TigetJet.

Michaela: I suggest you to use any windows XP and VISTA but not the latest version of VISTA.

ryan: I am using XP.

Michaela: Okay.

Michaela: Try these fixes first.

Michaela: Please unplug your magicJack. Now go to "Start" in Windows and click on "run".

Michaela: In there write regedit and press enter.

ryan: ok

Michaela: Now click on + sign next to HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE.

Michaela: Click on + sign next to SYSTEM

Michaela: Click on + sign next to CurrentControlSet

Michaela: Click on + sign next to Enum

ryan: ok

Michaela: Now find folder called USB. Right click on that and click on "Permissions". In permissions click on the check mark called "Allow" to the right of "Full Control".

Michaela: Click Ok.

ryan: ok

Michaela: Now click on + sign next to USB and then find the two folders called "Vid1307", right click on one at a time and select delete.

ryan: that doesnt exist

Michaela: It's okay, let's proceed.

Michaela: Now click on - Sign next to USB.

Michaela: Right click on Folder called USBSTOR and allow permissions.

Michaela: Now click on + sign next to USBSTOR.

ryan: ok

Michaela: Find the folders called "CdRom&Ven_YMAX&Prod_MagicJack&Rev" and "Disk&Ven_YMAX&Prod_MagicJack&Rev"

ryan: ok

Michaela: Right click on those one at a time and delete them.

ryan: ok

Michaela: Now exit Regedit and then plug your magicJack in.

ryan: ok

Michaela: Thank you.

ryan: its loading up again

Michaela: Okay

ryan: ok loaded

ryan: whats next

Michaela: Do you see the dial pad now?

ryan: yes

ryan: but still cant toggle to telephone

Michaela: Okay.

Michaela: I suggest your to use another computer and telephone on magicjack.

ryan: lol, spent $500 on this HP you want me to buy another

ryan: That kind of defeats the purpose of the cheap phone service

Michaela: Please be informed that magicjack will only work on a compatible computer and Internet connection.

ryan: This computer exceeds the specs needed for MagicJack

ryan: and my 150mbps fiber internet connection is fast enough to run thousands of MagicJacks at the same time

ryan: On the back of the magicjack box it says all you need is a:

ryan: 1. Computer

ryan: 2. Windows XP, Vista or Mac

ryan: (Which I have XP)

ryan: and 3. High speed internet

ryan: (which I also have)

Michaela: Okay.

Michaela: I will make a report on this concern to our higher department.

Michaela: This issue needs to be escalated.

ryan: In the meantime is there some type of credit I could get, such as some free months or something? Im already over a hour and a half late to be at work too, and this isnt my first time troubleshooting this as I said...

Michaela: May I know where you bought the magicjack device?

ryan: from MagicJack

ryan: one of your dealers...

Michaela: I see.

ryan: Ive purchased quite a few MJ's

ryan: and still have a few new ones in package, from walmart.

Michaela: Please bring the magicjack to them and tell them the exact nature of your problem.

ryan: Um... they shipped it to me. I dont even know where it was from, like New Jersey or something?

Michaela: They only has the power whether they will replace it or will credit you Ryan.

ryan: And I am sure if I went to walmart they would look at me like I was an idiot, if you cant figure it out they never would have a clue.

Michaela: You may ask a replacement there Ryan.

ryan: well, its this computer that is having a problem with your software I am sure. The MJ works fine in the toshiba laptop like I said

ryan: Besides its beyond the walmart return or exchange period...

Michaela: I guess yes, you cam also use that old laptop to use the magicjack.

ryan: its not my laptop.

ryan: it goes with my friend when he leaves

Michaela: I do apologize for that.

ryan: so there is no driver file you can send out to me or anything?

Michaela: I do apologize but as I have checked it here, your magicjack is working fine and it's only your computer that the magicjack won't work on it.

ryan: it wont install correctly...

Michaela: I suggest you to ask for a replacement and try a new magicjack on your computer.

ryan: ive used other magicjacks on this PC they do the same thing

ryan: like I said its something between the PC and the auto-installer doesnt work correctly or something

Michaela: Yes.

Michaela: Your computer is not compatible to use a magicjack.

ryan: Why?

ryan: There must be a reason.

ryan: The specifications exceed the Toshiba.

Michaela: May I know the service pack of your WINDOWS XP please.

ryan: 1

Michaela: I see.

ryan: is there a special trick to get it to work with service pack 1

Michaela: No, it's just the same.

Michaela: Try to ask a replacement Ryan.

Michaela: I guess, your magicjack is defective.

ryan: No, its not really

ryan: But for instance lets say I did get a new one

ryan: How would I keep the same number?

Michaela: You need to contact us again so that we can transfer the old phone number to your new onwe.

Michaela: one*

^ I know I told some white lies in there.
(I have plenty of PC's but I want the Thinclient to run it because it uses less power and its so tiny.)
(The Thinclient is not faster than any PC I have)
(My work has a 150mbps fiber connection. Mine at home is just 30mbps, yet still plenty fast.)
(I wasnt late for work, I am late for sleep.)

I wonder how much money I cost MagicJack. @ $20/year (or less) I am shocked they even have 24/7 online support. I am sure its outsourced though...

Hi Ryan,

Did you ever get this resolved? I have a similar issue and wondered if you were able to fix yours and how you did it.

There is also somone else having same issue (this week) so maybe the fix can help us both.

Thanks.

Maybe you've tinkered too much. I also have a 5710. With a fresh install of XPe you should just have to set it up to log in as Administrator automatically, plug in the magic jack and everything will just work.

Try starting from scratch.

well.. I just bought these (HP T5710) and it's clean image. I am running a MJ on a Neoware unit and yes it installed fine and has been running two weeks and it's been perfect. I bought the 5710's for faxing and to work for another friend with MJ and it's not installing properly. I also spent time with MJ support with no luck.

Any thoughts as to what might be wrong ? I plug in MJ and it self installs but it also does make another screen pop up with "Found New Hardware." The softphone works fine, but Telephone toggle (radio button) does not work and cannot use a regular telephone. :(

I know it can work and works very well and I am extremely happy with MJ. This is puzzling though and even MJ support could not get it going. I'm doing google searches as well, and others have experienced this, but each one had their own fix. not one seems to stand out as the right one.

Thanks for the suggestion johnvan !!

Even though these were used units, I was told the image was just loaded. They had loaded 5.1.1 or somehting. I went to HP website and download clean image. See steps in this other link.
