Hello,
Before I ordered MJ I asked their tech support if I would be able to use MJ with my computer in standby mode. The tech said yes. When I installed MJ I discovered that not only can you not use MJ in standby mode it disables both standby and hibernate. I contacted MJ tech support to see if there was a work around so MJ would not disable those two power options. They said no. When I want to use standby or hibernate now I have to go into task manager and kill the magicjack.exe process.
I was hoping some one might know of a work around for this.
MJ disables power saving options

MJ and Power
Thanks for your response.
I have voicewing and was hoping MJ could replace it. After reading posts of different problems some people are having and the fact that I can't fax or put my computer in power saving modes I have decided to keep voicewing. As far as keeping MJ on I think that should be the customers decision I don't like any product on my computer that disables functions that I want to use. I have a grandcentral number, which I learned about on this forum and thanks for that info, so voicewing and my cellphone rings during the times I have MJ off. From what I have read the ata that came with the voicewing set up can't be unlocked. It has another phone port for a second line.

Yeah that is the power output rating of the power supply for the Linksys SPA2102 for example. But the ATA actually draws less than that. I measured the current going INTO the power supply (I'm talking about the 120vac line current) and measured the AC line voltage at the time. This way I was measuring not only the power used by the ATA but the total power used since some power is wasted in the power supply (that's why it gets a little warm).joecanadian wrote: Average ATA seems to use 2Amp x 5volt = 10 watts
Anyway the total power taken from the AC line for the Linksys SPA2102 including the power supply loss is only around 4.5 watts. Even with a call in process it was around the same.
A good rule of thumb used to be that if an electric appliance was left on 24/7 for a year, the cost of the electricity per year was very close to $1.00 for each watt. That was a while back so it's probably around $1.20 now depending on the cost per kWh where you live. So a computer that consumes 100 watts of power would cost around $120 per year to keep running 24/7 or $10.00 per month. The SPA2102 would cost less than $5.50 per year or less than $0.50 per month.
I'm not saying don't use MagicJack. Actually I like it. I'm just saying not to be fooled about the real cost of running one if you want your phone on all the time. $160 per year for the first year and $140 per year for subsequent years for device plus subscription plus power assuming only 100 watts for the computer which would likely require shutting off the monitor even to achieve that. And not many of us enjoy waiting for the lengthy Windows boot process in order to place a call, plus missing incoming calls while the PC is off. So turning the PC off and on is not a good solution. But I don't know the solution since I think MagicJack's business model relies on revenue from advertisers to cover their costs which I doubt are covered by subscribers given MagicJacks current low rates. MagicJack has to pay POTS phone companies each time they connect to the regular phone network. I really hope they can figure out a way to make this thing work from a business standpoint.
ATA = Analogue Terminal Adapter
Connects an Analogue Telephone to a VOIP network
Usually has an Ethernet jack, and an RJ-11 phone jack.
Sometimes referred to as VOIP Gateways, TA (Terminal Adapter), FXS Adapter, etc. Some ATAs are locked to a particular provider, and useless with any other. Virtually all ATAs use either the SIP or IAX industry standard protocol.

My XP desktop won't go into standby with the MJ plugged in but my Vista laptop went into sleep with MJ on it. I had to override sleep mode for the MJ to keep working all night.
1 watt X 24 hours X 365 days = 8.760 kilowatt hours.
I pay .18 for a kilowatt hour so that comes to $ 1.58 a year per watt. If anyone wants the numbers.

If you have XP Pro, there is a setting for "sleep mode" which I use all the time and my MJ works just fine with it. I'll put the comp asleep and then call my MJ with a cell phone and it wakes the comp and puts the call thru at the same time, of course the comp will then stay awake but if no one calls you while it is sleeping, it stays that way unless something else on your comp wakes it up.
