CAUTION - new update and Thin Clients

The current update release from MagicJack will prevent your MJ & Thin Client, some bare bones machines and some W2K machines from working correctly.

There is a temporary fix authored by Stewart to recover if you have applied or had the new update automatically applied to your machine and now find yourself getting a message saying that MagicJack could not find any audio devices on you system.

Also while talking with Stroths I decided that the new update allowed touch tones to work correctly with automated telephone menu systems. I was wrong, they have fixed it on the MJ server side so now that I know that the Touch Tone fix is not part of the update I am not sure what it does for you. It may help the folks that had low volume at the receiving parties end. I have no way of verifying that right now but I am sure someone that has that problem will jump in here and confirm one way or the other on that issue.

In any case it is sure nice to have the Automated Touch Tone problem fixed. Now I don't have to live in fear that the next number I dial is going to ask me to press a key to accept the million dollars they want to give me.

Also anyone that has purchased an HP Thin Client thru me please contact me and I will either log on remotely and handle the FIX or walk you thru the temporary FIX for the MJ update problem. Email is the best way to contact me.

To fix the problem yourself add this to your hosts file to prevent another automatic update ( HOSTS no suffix or file extension - located in the "etc" folder.):
0.0.0.0 upgrade.talk4free.com
Make sure you flush the DNS (ipconfig /flushdns) after making the change. (complements to Stroths for this essential piece of the fix).

Replace the new update with the original version you had prior to the update by executing it from a thumb drive plugged into your Thin Client. If you don't have a copy you can get it here:

I was wrong, they have fixed it on the MJ server side so now that I know that the Touch Tone fix is not part of the update I am not sure what it does for you.

This is more complex than I first thought.

Although I have not analyzed the outbound DTMF issue in any detail, I had concluded that the new version did fix it, because I tested it at 800-444-4444, entering 2 and then 2345678901 . The number was read back correctly. I retested with an old (071214) version, confirmed that it still failed, tried the new again, confirmed that it worked, and then posted my findings.

I am reasonably sure that this was not fixed server side -- I just reconfirmed the failure with the old version, after seeing your post. One possibility is that you are running an intermediate version (please post date, file version, URL, and/or MD5 of the magicJack.exe) that has the fix. Another is that the trouble is intermittent with your phone -- on mine, very brief tones will work correctly, even with the buggy versions.

My dial tone issues appear to be fixed because I tried out the automated system at one of my credit card companies that didn't work as of a month ago with my MJ. After the upgrade, it did work so either they fixed their phone system in the last month or the upgrade fixed it.

Argggh I'm confused.

Stroths, are you saying that the above versions are the latest which will not mess up your thin client? Why is the update only a couple of minutes older than the MJ executable?

I am currently running whichever version of MJ that was on your 1.1 release. How do I snag the most current usable MJ and update. Is this the same as what HolmanGT is offering from his download site?

My t5710 is running a modified full version of XP rather than XP Embedded like I provided to the community in stroths 1.0 through 1.2. I cannot say for sure if the version of MJ I am running would run or not on the 1.x releases. Sorry for the confusion.

And before anyone asks, I cannot make a release based on the copy of XP I have as it would not be legal. The version I provided in 1.x is legal because it was licensed for the HP Thin clients while my copy is my own personal copy not licensed for distribution.

What is on my site it the newest update prior to the 11th of this month. If you down load the update today you will get 1.80.4411.3084

The day before they put up a 3081 but almost immediately pulled that.

By the way if you want to know what the version is just right click on the file and go to the version tab and Eureka there it is.

Also it doesn't matter where you get it from MJ the Magicfix down load the Vista upgrade if they call it upgrade.exe they are all the same file no matter where you get it from on their site

I have not had enough coffee - so I am going to vent a little at MJ what are they up to. you don't throw out patches that are not adequately tested and on their home page they have a blatant lie - They say this is the last day of the of the free trial and we only have 20,000 units left. And each and every day they change the ending date to today's date. Does MJ think they are dealing with a bunch of idiots that see a "last day of the sale" statement and just jump on it. If I was Dan I would be furious with whomever put that on their site. As a matter of fact I would fire him/her for causing people to doubt the integrity of my company.

@Stroths, I don't know if you caught it in one of my meaningless post but I am using the 2910 (pre June 11th update) and the Automated system touch tone thing now works fine so they fixed it on the server side. Which now leaves me wondering what this new updates does except break thin clients.

PS - Good morning everyone even if it is not morning anymore, it is all proportional to the amount of Coffee intake. OK to be fair to M$ programmers Coffee or Jolt Cola and Twinkies.

Wow. I didn't realize the updates cause all these problems. It makes me wonder if I should feel lucky or not that I use linux. Mine never updates when I plug it in unless I switch it through my VM, which won't happen any more since the one that it worked no longer runs I'll have to plug it into a windows machine I suppose. Can't wait til linux version comes out!
