First, please confirm that your MJ was working properly in the country where you previously were.

One possible problem is the ISP blocking outbound UDP port 5070 or inbound UDP port 5060. Test to Boston at http://www.testyourvoip.com/ . If you can't get a score, or get a warning about retrying on an alternate port, then you may be out of luck, unless you can convince the ISP to open the ports for your account.

Also, many hotel systems, corporate firewalls, etc., block some ports. Try testing at another location if possible, or ask the local IT people for details.

If you continue to have trouble, please post what kind of Internet service you have, modem make and model, router if any, whether router is under your administrative control, what appears on softphone status screen at launch, and what appears when you try to call. Do you use any other VoIP services, e.g. Skype? Are those working properly?

I can guarantee you that vonage works in Dubai being that I talked to my sister there this morning. My sister and her family have lived there for the past 15 months and vonage has worked great for them. They even ported over their old phone number to it from NY and made sure it worked for them in the states before they moved there. I have had many 45 minute or more phone conversations with them from my MJ line and the calls were very good. Unless my brother-in-law has figured a way around their blocking or their just really lucky vonage in Dubai works great.

It is my understanding that port blocking is not universal among the several ISPs who service various areas of DUBAI. Can you ask the name of her provider and see if she is familiar with any other ISPs in country. May just be the luck of the draw she lives in an area with a more benevolent provider...

Just subscribe to www.privatevpn.com and establish a secure VPN tunnel first ... your MJ will work fine in Dubai over any ISP using privatevpn as all traffic is cloaked in the encrypted VPN tunnel. Its a very inexpensive service.

I just talked to my sister in Dubai this morning for about thirty minutes. I called her from my MJ to her Vonage line and the call quality was very good. I was testing out an old laptop I picked up for cheap and the calls on it are just as good if not better than my desktop. I think it can be said that voip calls are possible in Dubai.

How about http://hotspotshield.com/
I know that I cannot watch the videos on Canada on CBS from the US.
I've been using http://hotspotshield.com/ and can now watch the CBS videos
See if it will work for you.

MJ doesn't seem to work in Dubai, UAE

Post by AB »

Hi all,

I bought Magic Jack while I was visiting the US last month. Unfortunately it seems to be blocked in Dubai, U.A.E. Any tips on how to make it work?

The error it gives is "not connected, No network connection, Error 9".

I read something about the Hotspot shield which had mixed reviews.

Any tips would be highly appreciated.

Thanks!

AMEN!!!
I was biting my tongue and not saying ANYTHING about his "hundreds" of posts. Jeeeeeeez.
If he took 1/2 the time to do a search he might have gotten the right thread from the get go.
Thank you for saying something as I am tired of being the bad guy here when it comes to people over posting and NOT making a damn effort to search!!

THANK YOU

I talked to my sister the other day and she tells me that friends of hers are having trouble using their MJ's in parts of Dubai now. Playing around I found this link for vbuzzer http://www.vbuzzer.com/call/dubai/call-dubai.html they claim to be able to get voip to work in Dubai.
