no softphone - "Must plug..." - DevMgr shows M$ drivers
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Rec'd mJ end of Mar '08. Had previously installed XP SP3-RC1. mJ worked great 2-3 days, then many audio problems - chop, jitter, dropouts, disconnects, LOUD screeching, one-way echo, one-way audio, and more - but it would place calls.
Then, just over a month ago {end of May '08}, softphone would drop every time I tried to place or answer a call. After a couple weeks of -that- it refused to see my internet connection (errors 3 & 4). I popped up Wireshark and logged packets to determine ports it wanted, and manually opened them in both WiFi router and software firewall. Still no joy.
Scoured automated backups for old setup.exe; made it work again - for about a day and a half. Then mJ broke again, obliterating my USB printer driver. Could not fix ptr drvr until I unplugged the mJ!
With printer working again, replugged mJ - still no joy (random error 3 & 4). This continued a couple weeks until I decided I'd been screwed and would not have phone service. Before I threw it in a drawer, I tried unplug/replug routine about three times and it just started working!... Very odd.
I had about five days of much-improved service and call quality before -now- the softphone refusing to load at all. My Computer shows H: and I: (behind 3 hard drives and 2 optical) as blank devices with 0 byte capacity. Previously, My Computer would show storage space and a file system with directories and files. Checking DevMgr shows M$ drivers, which used to be TigerJet drivers. I never, EVER install M$ drivers as they always break EVERYTHING; WinUpdate seems to be -forcing- modifications (again...).
I've unplugged and replugged. I reset registry entries and rebooted a zillion times (referenced in another post here - search 'registry'). None of the website-referenced processes show in TaskMgr. I've run every mJ setup.exe file I can find. Every run of magicfix shows ALL items successfully tested.
Softphone still won't load, insisting "You must plug..." and mJ website fix attempts to load a Macintosh Java applet, which always fails, because it's not appropriate for WinXP!!!
I really wish they'd hire someone who knows -something- about networking, telecom and VoIP; this crap has REALLY become old and tiresome. One of my friends refuses to accept calls from me because of the deafening screeches and other frustrating issues; I can't say I blame him.
That aside, I'm sure there's a way to replace the hardware device drivers for mJ through DevMgr in WinXP, but I can't seem to find a source of these files. The drivers I believe M$ shoved at my device have disabled it and I can no longer access it. Even a CMD window 'dir H:' or 'dir I:' responds with "The system cannot find the path specified."
Does anyone have working TigerJet/mJ driver files for this device? If I can just get WinXP to recognize the device again, I'm certain one of my mJ setup.exe files will revive my phone service. Then of course, I need to find a way to keep the Redmond Nazis from hosing it up!
Thanks in advance,

PS - Anyone know anything about progress on Linux support???

Think I got it solved for now...
I used the following process successfully:
- restarted WinXP
- manually backed up all 'C:\<user>\AppFiles\mjusb' files
- deleted mJ/YMax registry keys
- unplugged all other USB devices
- restarted WinXP
- plugged mJ into powered USB hub
- ran Setup.exe from Feb (previously backed up)
- unplugged mJ
- restarted WinXP
- replugged mJ (pwrd hub)
- let it download new files
- Softphone started!!!
- restarted WinXP
- made phone calls!!!
From this, I determined the device driver files shown in DevMgr as provided by M$ were probably obtained and installed by mJ Engineering, in an effort to stabilize device operation. In light of all the security/authentication now included in WinXP, this would make sense.
Apologies to anyone my previous comment offended (re: driver update pushed by M$ w/o permission -- M$ -has- done this kind of thing before, though).
At least the darn thing is working again... for now.
Hope this helps someone else!
If anyone knows about progress on Linux support, please PM me!!! TIA.
