Has anybody been terminated for using an ATA?
I have been reading about using an ATA on MagicJack. I want to try it but I am curious to know if anyone has had their account terminated for doing this. In readin through the forum I see no first hand reports just rumor. What's the real scoop? Is MJ cracking down on ATA use in any fashion other than making it tough to do?
I've been reading this forum for about 8 months and I haven't heard of anyone directly being terminated for using an ATA. Magicjack in the past has simply made the password longer and more complex and finally encrypting it to discourage the use of ATAs. There seems to be a few people using them, but my guess is that is now so difficult to obtain the login credentials that the percentage of people doing this is probably very small and not worth the effort involved to go after them. Given how fast Magicjack is expanding, they're probably dedicating the majority of their efforts in serving new customers and solving technical issues. When the service first started, the Magicjack customers were mostly the geeks who understand technology so Magicjack could focus on software development, new features, and improving security. Now that they're advertising to the masses, they're probably getting swamped by support from non-technical users who require a lot of assistance.
I believe that Magicjack probably knows who is using ATAs, but as long as the number of people using them remains very low and their ATAs are properly configured as to not cause issues with the service, Magicjack may figure that it isn't worth it to shut them off. Doing so would likely cause Magicjack more harm in the long run given that the ATA users are probably the more technical users and provide lots of free support to Magicjack customers via this type of forum. Pissing off their long-time customers, who not only provide free technical support but also provide Magicjack with valuable feedback and suggestions, would probably hurt Magicjack more than the loss of the ability to display ads to them. I'm also willing to bet that the overwhelming majority of Magicjack customers probably don't even know what an ATA is. They happily just insert the Magicjack into their USB port and use it as it was supposed to be used.
The purpose of the Magicjack software will eventually be to display ads to the end-users. The technical people have other ways of getting around this other than using an ATA. As long as 99.9% of the clients use it on their desktops as designed, it may be worth it to leave the remaining 0.01% non-standard clients alone and keep them happy enough to recommend this service to their friends and co-workers. I know personally I've been satisfied with the service enough to recommend it to several other people who have purchased one (or more), but if they made me mad then I definitely wouldn't recommend them to anyone else.

Sounds right. I agree with you!fsu1991 wrote: The purpose of the Magicjack software will eventually be to display ads to the end-users. Re: Password Length
If you are talking about your SIP password, it is 20 characters. (A mixture of letters and numbers.)ramjet555 wrote:I would really like to know what the current PASSWORD LENGTH IS?
