new user.. do I have to leave my computer on 24/7?

Post by witelite »

Hi,

I JUST got the Magic Jack. And so far, so good. I didn't realize that I will always have to dial my own area code in order to make local calls, but I guess I'll just adjust.... Or maybe I'll just set up all the people I call in the favorites so I don't have to dial.

Anyway, I've made a couple of outbound calls and the audio on both ends were great.
I read some past posts regard if you call yourself on the land line, it will keep ringing even after you hang up... I did that and It stopped ringing right after I hung up, so good on that too.

Here's a question that I'M SURE has been asked before.... I'm just too lazy to try to find it.... do I have to leave my computer ON 24/7??? If I DO :D , do I have to always have the softphone window open?? :?:

witelite... dialing your own area code seems to be the way of the future. It's not just specific to MJ. There is an excellent post about this by Stewart, who hasn't been around much lately, but anything that he posts is worth reading. You may want to do a search on the subject. It can be a grunt, but IMO, worth the effort.

Re: leaving your computer on 24/7... MJ has voicemail, so if your computer is turned off, you can receive VM, but if you want to call or pick up directly, yes, you would have to leave your computer on. There is a *sticky* thread that discusses using a thin client to conserve power and have continuous access to your MJ.

I leave my computers on 24/7, so it's not an issue for me. Also, I use it primarily for outgoing calls. I have incoming calls forwarded to my cell phone.

One last comment.... I love my MJ. I have two of them. For $20 a year, it does way more than I ever expected. Hope this helps.

This thread has some info about that. Personally, I use the AutoSizer solution mentioned there.
