magic jack on RAM drive?

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone was able to run magic jack on a RAM drive? I've heard about creating 'drives' from my internal RAM but have never done it. I thought it would be nice if I could have the hard drive go to sleep and still be able to use mj. I leave the computer all on day so that's not a problem. Can anyone give me any tips on how to setup a RAM drive in Win XP and how to get MJ to install onto that drive? Does the internal RAM 'wear out' fast like an external flash drive would?

You've heard people talking about RAM drives because the HP Thin Client that many of us use for our MagicJack uses a RAM drive and is setup to correctly use this RAM drive. For a regular computer to use a RAM drive the way you are describing (for your regular HDD to go to sleep) would require more than just moving the MagicJack program folder to the RAM drive. The operating system which resides on your regular hard drive would still need to be accessed from time to time which would cause the regular HDD to spin up. Which wouldn't gain you what you are looking for.

For about $100 (if you are patient) you can have yourself a fully setup and configured ThinClient which will run whisper quiet. I bought my Thin Client for $60 shipped on eBay, had an old laptop with 512mb of RAM that I wasn't using and bought a 1gb DOM for the thin client for $24 shipped. You can easily get a 512mb RAM chip for the thin client for ~$20.

That $100 would be money well spent if you plan on using your MagicJack for a long time.

If you really want to check out a RAM drive, search google for "AR Soft RAM Disk 1.20" which is a freeware software app that'll create a RAM drive in XP for you.

Thanks for the good info. I think the thin client it very cool and would be tempted except for the fact that we have 6 computers in the house right now. I was going to use my mac mini for the mj but I don't have an intel cpu. So my new plan was to use one of our old laptops (where the screen is starting to go bad) and use that as the mj computer. figured the screen would be off and if I could get the hard drive to turn off it would be even better.

I'll check out that link that you sent... if I could somehow get mj onto a ram drive and not have windows access the hard drive that would be sweet.

you could always buy a small SSD (solid state disk) for use in that computer. SSD is similiar to the DOM used in the thin client -- no moving parts.
