Sleep mode kills phone in Vista

Running MJ on Vista. When the computer is slept (while I sleep) and brought back up the phone is no longer reachable, nor dials out. Pulling the unit from the USB and reinserting it will fix it, but as a daily ritual doesn't fly. Wondering if anyone else have this issue and if there is a possible fix.

On a side note, the caller ID # does not show up on the phone itself. Could this be a problem on my end or is it the same for anyone?

i run my mj on vista and i don't leave my laptop on sleep mode when im not using it, like when i go to sleep or watch tv. basically u have to turn ur pc on the whole time if u want to still keep on receiving calls. it works for me. i turn it off though when im not home and just check my email for voicemails. or u can always forward it to ur cellphone number when you're really out and you want to check the call logs.

Your problem is a well known issue without a fix. accept to not let the computer or for that matter the USB ports to go to sleep for inactivity as the previous poster mentioned.

The caller ID not showing on your phone is another very well know issue and it is peculiar to some phones. In fact the phone system that I use has the problem, which is cureable by adding a 100 K Ohm resistor across the MagicJack phone line. There are sever post on how to fix this and I will give you a link to one of mine because it does not require any special tools or soldering equipment.

I had a thought, ... let me know if it sounds good or not needed
the fixed resistor can be replaced with a 200k ohm multi-turn variable resistor so you can have
a large range of resistance and multi turn accuracy for times when more or less resistance
may be needed to fix different condidions ...

i.e.- more phones on the line, or different version mj hardware interface voltages ... etc...

variable resistors have three leads but two are attached together, and the other is left as one.

either end is attached with the center to form the first end.
depending on the end you attach to the center, will make the resistor value
go up or down when it's rotated clock-wise, or counter-clock wise.

I am moving a bit forward on the sleep mode issue. I have found that by double clicking on the 'safely remove hardware' icon, selecting the MJ device (H on my system), select properties, then exit out in a few seconds it resets the USB device making the phone functional.

So obviously the USB port CAN be reset softly. Folks at MS just need to make this happen when coming out of sleep and this problem would be done for.

I wonder if a script can be written to just one click all these actions.

I suggest you look at AutoIT[1]. It's an amazing scripting tool that lets you automate a lot of desktop (mouse, window opening, activating, minimizing, keyboard) activities. A script can be compiled and distributed as a .exe file.

Download and install it. Then spend some time looking at the AutoIT Help->Function Reference. Within that section, look at Tray Functions, Registry Management, Window Mangement, and Mouse Control.

I've done some really amazing things with this tool. But, it takes a lot of experimentation and creativeness to get around some challenges. It can take a lot of time.

For example, detecting when the computer came out of sleep mode may require checking a registry key. (Check it constantly, and detect a state change of a value.). It can take a lot of time to find out how Windows stores that state. (I know because I had to write a script that would detect if enough inactivity had occurred to cause the screensaver to be displayed. That turned out to be a registry value. Thus my suggestion to study the Registry Management functions.).

Sometimes things are relatively easy. If the "safely remove" screen could be displayed using a command, it's easy to start a process by command name. But, if the only way to display it is from the tray, then you have to familiarize yourself with Tray Functions (to locate the correct item and click it).

Once the window is displayed, it's fairly easy to find the window (WinExists, WinGetHandle). And then use the mouse to activate the first entry, and the "send" down key to step through each item until you find the one you're looking for. Then left mouse click to get to properties.

I can give you some pointers if you get stuck on anything. But, this is more than I'd want to take on myself (at the moment). It's definitely worth doing because once you have AutoIT under your belt, you can do almost anything.

I was googling to learn more about the registry key containing the state (sleep, resume, etc.). I found this concerning USB sleep in Vista:

Recap on the last post. I forgot to mention I did add to the registry the 'ForceHCResetOnResume' and it didn't seem to work, but it MIGHT have something to do with the safely remove hardware trick if that doesn't work for someone else. I am curious to hear of someone else trying it.

There is a simpler method that worked for me. Just clip a phone cable apart anywhere that will give you enough room to strip the ends and just rewire the red and green wire back together, but include a 100k ohm resistor jumped across the two. Piece of cake. No soldering even needed.

Well your method is definitely to the point. Be careful you don't short out the pair or let any exposed wires touch anything metallic. I don't think it would do any damage but it is better to error on the side of safety and at least tape up the connections if you haven't already.

Is there a solution to the issue of waking the phone after the computer is woken from sleep mode?

Problem:
- MJ works fine
- Computer sleeps
- MJ/phone unavailable
- Computer wakes
- MJ software works (receives calls) / phone is not available (no dial tone)
- Unplug MJ USB, plug back in
- MJ software restarts and phone has dial tone

Everything wakes up but the phone. I tried the 'ForceHCResetOnResume' registry hack but that did not work.

I don't know of any workaround for the sleep problem.

There is however one thing you might give a try.

Go into the Device manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers > then do a properties on each item labeled USB Root Hub > go to the power management tab and un-check allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

OK your way back to the desktop and reboot. I don't know if this will fix it but it is the only thing I know to keep the USB ports powered up. If it is the fact that MJ's software can't call home when the computer is in sleep mode then I think you are in a bind.

One more word on this... if the monitor is out cold and the hard drive is spun down and the CPU is just idling there is not going to be much difference in power consumption if that is your concern. Back in the day sleep mode never worked and always crashed stuff so I learned to never use it and never could regain faith in it... just my emotional hang up.
