What phones work better with MJ?

Hi guys,
I wanted to post this a few months ago, really, here it goes....I got the MJ six months ago....it worked pretty good at first, but I started having problems (calls quality above all) since last month.
I am using a "Panasonic" phone (cordless) that comes with the Fax....not sure if this is part of the problem.
In essence, do some phones work better with the MJ than others?, which phone do you guys recommend to use with MJ....????

This will draw a lot of flack but there is not a tinkers damn between phones in the middle to upper price range. I would be much more inclined to think if you are having problems with your Panasonic combo phone/fax it it MJ not you.

For testing purposes when fooling around with thin clients I us a $3 dollar princess phone I picked up at "Big Lots" and it produces excellent audio in both directions.

Now if you want to now what I think is a good phone (sorry don't have the model number) but Costco sell a Panasonic DECT 6.0 phone. They have it in two different configurations. One package come with three handsets and one come with five handsets. They are black and silver and if you go to Costso's phone section you will spot them right off.

They work great and don't have the caller ID not showing that some phones like mine have. My system is Panasonic DECT 6.0 also and works great but I did have to add the 100k ohm resistor to get the caller ID to display. My daughter has the version I am suggesting to you and she has never had a problem with the caller ID showing.

Also, my phone is kind of old I guess, it's a 2.4 Ghz. (maybe that could be part of the MJ quality issues?; not sure.)

PS: Also, I read in one post here that headseats do improve the reception....do you use them?

Remember you want Panasonic DECT 6.0 don't let the wife talk you into some a couple of dollars cheaper.

DECT 6.0 is on a freq of about 1.9 GHz all by itself so it will not inter fear with any wireless network you may have. The model that I am suggesting also has about 12 hours of talk time - incredible.

The only headsets that I have used is on occasion I will use my Moto D200 dongle and one of my Cell phone Bluetooth headset. But generally I just use the Panasonic DECT 6.0 and call quality is excellent. If you want to hear it PM me and I will give you my MJ number.

I'm using a Uniden Dect 6.0 with excellent results. Prior to the Uniden, I was using a Plantronics 2.4, also with with great results but it was interfering with my wifi (or the other way around) and routinely disconnecting.

I haven't had good luck with Uniden products in the past, so I'm not sure why I bought it, but I'm happy.

Problems with 2.4 and router wireless is how I decided to change from Vtech to Panasonic. The Panasonic units have rubber inlaid button numbers. My aging mother things you are supposed to use your finger nails to press the buttons, which works of course, but it also remove painted on button number Arg!!

I actually think Uniden is a very good brand. They used to be what I considered low end but like PNY memory devices, Uniden has raised their quality by several orders of magnitude.

In short my backing or promoting Panasonic is a purely subject opinion based on "It works for me". But as I said in an earlier post the Panasonic I have is the model prior to the one that Costco now sells and it does not have the Caller ID "no show" problem that mine does. And oh by the way it is less costly than the model I have and has talking caller ID.

PS - At Costco the Uniden unit are fancier and more colorful. The Panasonic units are good looking but not as fancy looking as the Unidens - which always help sell the wife, sometime a more important consideration than the Brand.

You might be surprised with the new Panasonics - the audio quality is excellent and you can set the ring to VM from 1 thru 8 or something like that. I have mine set to four and it just beats MJ on the pick up so I get my VM right here at home - I like that better than all the clutter of VMs being sent to me via email.

Good - and I am still partial to Panasonic - "Go Figure"

PS - the only problem I have had with the $3 dollar princess phone is if you set the volume to high it will blow your brains out. That sucker is loud !!!

Glad to hear I can set the Panasonic to 4 rings and still have it beat the MJ to voicemail. I just assumed I had to use two, and did not experiment.

Lots easier to reach an extension before the 4th ring than before the 2nd ring!

I'm finding a corded phone works better in my home office. Corded has less static. I'm off to get a 2-line desk phone. POTS on one line, MJ on the other.

I've tried a couple of cordless phones, but the sound quality is not quite as good. It could be the cordless base is beside the laptop and about 4' away from the wireless router--so getting interference? Mind you these weren't expensive cordless phones, one AT&T and one vTech. The DECT phones people are talking about are 2 - 3 times as expensive.

Higher or Lower is not as silly as you may think. Radio signals tend to produce second and third harmonics and sometime at a pretty high level so if you had a phone that ran at 1.2 GHz the second harmonic would be 2.4 GHz which is right on too of you 2.4 wireless. But with a DECT 6 running at 1.9 GHz the second harmonic is 3.8 GHz well above your 2.4 GHz router... so no problem.

If you use a phone that is above you 2.4 GHz router it is generally no problem either because it is difficult to generate sub-harmonics but in the the case of a 5.8 GHz system the first sub-harmonic would be very low energy at 2.9 while close to your 2.4 system and considering that sub-harmonics are generally very low in power the chances of it causing problems is very remote.

All that crap out of the way please keep in mind that most 5.8 MHz phones still use 2.4 MHz for one of the channels. I don't know which they use it for bout you have a duplex system and on channel is 5.8 and the other is 2.4. so there is still a chance of a problem with a 5.8 phone causing you problems... Albeit I personally have never had a problem with a 5.8 system.

Now back to the DECT 6.0 this is the product of some commercial spectrum that was surplussed and given back to the public and the phone manufacturers convinced the FCC to dedicate it to the cordless phone arena. So there is nothing else in the spectrum but cordless phones and to the best of my knowledge 1.9 or DECT 6.0 phone both transmit and receive in the spectrum, none of the crap where incoming is 2.4 and Xmitt is 1.9 or vise versa.

Short story use a good quality DECT 6.0 phone and you will be very happy with it for a long time to come. Remember that the router people are trying to re-awaken the 5.8 GHz band for use in dual channels 'N' routers (2.4 & 5.8 GHz and they will freq hop depending on what appears to be the clearest for THEIR purposes), so a 5.8 phone doesn't look quite as good as it once did.

Is it a good idea to take your router out of Auto Channel Select? Leaving it in auto select is sometimes the only way to stay away from the neighbors and with 'N' routers the router will look for clear channels and also channels that provide the best 'N' reflection patterns for multiphase reception.

These damn things have gotten so smart that every time I try to tweak one I am the one that ends up getting tweaked - literally !!!

I never realized how many wireless router's were out there until a couple of weeks ago. I was working with a friend in a Gated community for Senior Citizens in Florida and she was having some wireless problems with her MJ and audio quality.

It is no wonder she was having problems - I logged onto her system and took a look at her wireless connections. I don't know how to say this "God their was a gazillion mostly unlocked, you could access the WEB for years, free. OK back to the topic I could not believe the number of units that were on channel 1 and 6. I forget which brand tends to default to 1 but I am pretty sure the older Linksys units that all defaulted to 6.

Short story - after getting her system working I immediately checked mine and put it to Auto Channel Select. And of course the last time I looked it had picked channel 1 probably one of the more croweded ones in my area, "Go Figure"

The problem with messing with the FCC is almost every rule violation they have has and attached "and/or" ten thousand dollar fine. If not for that little pesky penalty I would have one of those commercial 3 watt booster for 2.4 GHz. Now that I would consider truly wireless, not this stuff I have now with just enough power to make it to the other end of the house if you hold your face just right and have a strong tail wind.
