Random Beeps!

Post by gnimsh »

So, I've been using the softphone since my jack started working again, but every so often I hear random beep noise, as if the person on the other phone is pushing a key. This has happened with different callers, and I've asked both of them if they pushed a key and both of them said they did not. They can also not hear this beeping sound, and I have not pushed any keys myself, so I can only assume that this is some kind of bug in the software.

Has anyone else experienced this beeping noise?

My fix for now is just to use another softphone...

gnimsh,

I have notice the beeps and boops from time to time and it doesn't alway sound like a key press just some kind of strange tone and sometime just a strange trash noise.

What softphone are you using and is it difficult to set up. My MJ softphone doesn't work all the well and I would love to find something that does what it should. Mine more often than not comes up in headset mode and the softphone software will not let me change it back to headset. So I have to reboot a couple of time until I get lucky and it comes up in handset mode.

I'm using the XLite softphone, and I haven't used it a whole lot since I got it running again, but I'm going to assume that the sound doesn't happen in it...

Let us know - I was assuming the noise was from the MJ network but I have been wrong before.

gnimsh,

OK now that you know the source, are you going back to X-Lite?

Yes for now I have, but I've had complaints from friends and family back home that there's more static in xlite than MJ. I did install the tigerjet line echo cancelation app today, so I'm hoping that that will make a difference at some point too.

I recently lent my MJ to a friend to try it out. He called me using the MJ and every few minutes I would hear a DTMF tone for about 500ms. I told him that he was hitting a button while he was talking to me. He told me that he was on a desk phone and that his fingers were no where near the keypad. I continued to hear a tone every few minutes for the duration of the call.

I requested RMA to return my magicjack and complained about the random DTMF beeps. Within an hour, I got an email from customer service telling me to turn down the mic volume on the softphone. (click Menu, then volume/headset control)

I turned the mic volume all the way down to minimum on both the phone and headset/other tabs, then raise the mic volume in the phone tab a tad bit until the other side could hear me loud enough, and sure enough, the random beeps went away. (tested for about an hour).

Try it.

Edited: Just to clarify a little bit: the adjustments are made on the softphone interface, but the effects are on the normal phone.

I also experienced random DTMF tone during calls. However, I was using the real phone, not MJ softphone. I think MJ is still buggy.

I'm glad that someone likes my "simple" assessment :)

If MagicJack is too perfect, we wouldn't be here, would we? :)

Not that I think we will ever have to worry about your assessment #2 but yup, we would be hard put to have anything to Bitch about. Things would sure get dull around this site.

And Thanks again for getting my day started on a pleasurable note.

Follow the discussion on this thread. If you're using PC headset for calls, try lowering the microphone volume from the softphone. Some say it fixes the issue. If you're using real phone then no fix yet from MJ. Perhaps soon. "Soon" seems to be a typical response I get when chatting with MJ support

I too am using a real phone plugged into MJ and when on calls I hear random DTMF tones as if the caller was touching the keypad (they are NOT). This happens with all conversations whether called or calling. The other party CANNOT hear the tones.
