Install Problems - I give up - Wasn't meant to be!! WORKING
Well I finally got it to run..... Here's how!!
Tried plugging it into a USB port right on the motherboard. It seems that the USB ports on the front of my CMStacker case may not be fully powered?
So while it was plugged in to the motherboard I did a cold reboot.
Doing this the MJ was picked up during the cold boot.
Once it was showing up in explorer I was then able to reformat MJ.
Once formatted a double-click on the icon in explorer rebuilt the MF and now all is good. Even tried it on two XP machines.
So my lesson is - even though my front of the case USB ports run my keyboard, mouse, Blue tooth device it would not power the MJ. Not a big deal I just use the USB extension cord.
Also try cold booting with MJ plugged in, almost like the BIOS picks it up.
Once it installed it asked me to reboot and now all is good.
Hope this helps the next guy .......
Update >>>>>
Well I've lost count of how many times I've rebooted, and system restored.
But I am done! It won't work.
I SUSPECT but can't prove that the Upgrade.exe corrupted firmware / software on the device.
So if anybody has some last minute ideas - please let me know. I really wanted this thing to work.
Sum up - The USB device is not recognized. The Blue light flashes and each time it flashes the device trys to work. Flashes off the unrecognized device message flashes.
Any ideas!!!!!!!
Plugged it in the 1st. time and it installed the softphone etc. but wouldn't register.
Did the MagicFix , then the Upgrade.
It then allowed me to register - BUT - Now no worky.
When I plug it in the blue light only flashes and Windows XP keeps cycling the USB message that the USB isn't recognized.
It continues trying and repeatedly presents the USB Not found message.
Running Windows XP with all service packs ...

Try wiping clean the MJ drive that mounts as the Phone "drive" (the CD one is read-only) -- that usually produces decent results and forces the entire Registration process all over again.HolmanGT wrote:kootenay,

testing123,
This reply is mostly to supplant people fear of "Test123 is off his rocker" suggestion. I actually read one that said they reformatted the drive and it fixed their problems. Now I will be the first to tell you I thought that guy was totally nutz.
Anyway I was getting restless for something to do so I made an Acronis image of my drive just in case (never had to use it) and reformatted my MJ. The thing reconfigured itself and works fine. I didn't have anything wrong with mine so I don't know if it accomplishes anything but I sure wouldn't be afraid to give it a try.
It does rebuild itself from the ground up and as testing123 has said you have to go thru the registration process again so the only caveat that I can think of is you had better know your user name and password or you will be up the proverbial creek.

I may be crazy, but I am definitely not "off my rocker" (as far as MJs are concerned at least)
Glad it worked for you.

I sure hope you didn't think I was saying you were "off your rocker" but the first time I heard someone suggest formatting the MJ unit I sure thought they were.
Also I said I didn't have anything wrong with mine so I don't know if it did any good or not. Well that is not exactly true. Since I did the reformat think I am able to put the MJ Icon in my startup folder and it actually starts up automatically now.

Well I tried the MJrRecover and again no joy - it only says "Device not Found"
The problem is the devise never gets totally recognized. After you plug it in it repeatedly tries to get itself discovered and keeps cycling the message "USB Device not Recognized" so you see it never gets far enough to be seen in Explorer thus you can't format something that doesn't show up.
With Device Manager open is it keeps trying to get recognized it shows up as a "Usb Mass Storage Device" but only for 2 seconds while it cycles again.
The Blue light flashes once every 4 seconds ...... Ah!!
Looking like the device is NFG.
Help, any quick and dirty steps to get a replacement?

digitalnomad,
1. copy everything off the MJ box and save it on your hard drive just in case. It is not much, a few megs.
2. Format the drive that you just copied the files off of.
3. Then then double click the MJ desktop Icon and the first thing that will pop up is the registration box, fill it in with Name and password hit enter and MJ will take it from their.
PLEASE make sure you copy everything off the MJ unit to a temp folder before you format it just as a safe guard you most likely will just end up deleting it when you are finished but better safe than sorry.
The format: Just right click on the MJ icon (the one that has all the files in it and should be the first drive letter of the two MJ drives.) select format, FAT and default allocation cluster size. "Drum Roll for effect" then hit enter. it only takes a couple of seconds. Then back to step 3.

Perhaps I missed the answer to this question, but have you gone into chat with MJ support about this problem? If not I would recommend doing so ... they should either help fix the problem or replace your device.kootenay wrote:Well I tried the MJrRecover and again no joy - it only says "Device not Found"

Trouble-Shooting
Can a computer virus damage my magicJack?
Not likely. If a virus deleted your magicJack software, you can go to http://www.magicjack.com/magicfix/ to restore your magicJack.
So to me, this is pretty much like formatting the drive.

2. wipe "phone drive" (can fix certain provision issues. good=non destructive)
3. chg phone # (can fix cetain limited vmail or crossed # or mj asterisk server issue. bad=only get 1 free chg. also may take 72 hrs for stable service to return)
just my opinion

All I know is I ain't trying it unless it's a last resort ditch effort! I enjoy tinkering for tinkering sake but right now just trying to get things as stable as possible on my end (in hopes that MJ does the same on their end!)testing123 wrote:Yes, that was a pleasant surprise (that you are not screwed when you do this) LOL ... it does make you a little nervous though.

I hear you ... remember you can "backup" the MJ Drive and restore the "backup" at any time. I have had to do this (wipe the drive) numerous times w/o ANY issues whatsoever on a couple of my MJs
Well I finally got it to run..... Here's how!!
Tried plugging it into a USB port right on the motherboard (back of the case). It seems that the USB ports on the front of my CMStacker case may not be fully powered?
So while it was plugged in to the motherboard I did a cold reboot.
Doing this the MJ was picked up during the cold boot.
Once it was showing up in explorer I was then able to MJ_Recover.exe it, then reformat MJ after another boot because MJ_Recover.exe locks it so you can't refomat (read-only)without rebooting.
I also could not reformat by simply right-clicking / format. I had to go to >Control Panel>Administrator Options> Computer options> Disk Management - then find the drive , right-click format.
Once formatted a double-click on the icon in explorer rebuilt the MF and now all is good. Even tried it on two XP machines.
So my lesson SEEMS to be - even though my front of the case USB ports run my keyboard, mouse, Blue tooth device it would not power the MJ. Not a big deal I just use the USB extension cord that came with MJ.
Also when cold booting with MJ plugged in, the BIOS picked it up as a hard-drive - this is what saved the day. I could never get it mounted before.
I am still convinced that the MJ became corrupted, as it woudn't run on any of three machines after the upgrade.exe.
Remember the intial reason for doing upgrade.exe is because I could not register during the first use install. It kept telling me that I was not connected to the internet.
I also did System Recovery on all the computers so this removed MJ software from all machines, and this may be important.
After the reformat of the MJ - I double clicked on the MJ icon in Explorer - can't remember which one as two show up in explorer - but not to worry as one is read ony. Then click on auntorun and it rebuilt MJ. Then after it was finished it performed and unrequested upgrade your a lucky guy kinda thing. Rather ironic as I had not been feeling so lucky in trying to get it to run!
It's been running now for a FULL 24 hours!!! Not quite your business line replacement but good fun.
I am also STUNNED at the performance - I have an older Panasonic cordless plugged into her - WOW - the volume is huge, connection is strong, and no real delay. Only during the intial dialing does it seem to burp, stutter & fart once connected it cleans up.
This was surprising because my experiment with Vonage was disguisting - no quality, wouldn't dial some not all local numbers, one-way conversations, and above all the hassle with cancelling the account.
Anyways, back to work - I am still behind after spending all morning yesrterday with MJ.
Hope this helps the next guy .......

Dude, that is a KEY feature to use with VOIP ... it basically prioritizes the packets going through your router to/from the Internet. Read this post (esp. the "Problems" Section)kumar wrote:I need helping my QOS to....I have/had a wrt54g that I am waiting for a replacment (don't ask)testing123 wrote:Yes, it is ... esp if you have QOS in your Router/Firewall ... only prob so far is that "when" you mentioned is a big WHEN.SpamBox wrote:Voice Quality really is great (when everything is working properly)

Kumar
For example, any of you who are big "gamers" that are using an mj will probably experience some "jitter" etc. because the gaming may use up significant bandwidth on your connection.
mj and VOIP in general use UDP which is sort of like bulk data transfer and the TIMING of those packets is VERY important. i.e., unlike a file download, where you can actually get pieces of the file in any order and then "reassemble" the packets in the right order, VOIP UDP packets really need to arrive in the right order for the conversation to make sense.
SO, for VOIP, some key factors are:
1) Latency (How long the data takes the go through the pipe) IMHO just as or MORE important than bandwidth
2) Bandwidth (How much data can go thru the pipe)
3) Routing (What path and how many hops the data takes to get from one end of the pipe to the other; w/ VOIP if different packets take different routes, this can be a problem -- yes, this is related to Latency)
Long story short: QOS can at least ensure that thru YOUR Internet connection, VOIP Packets get the HIGHEST priority (more than you "gaming" packets, and more than your download/filesharing packets -- as it should)
For MJ, you would want to prioritize:
1) UDP 5060 and 5070 (so much conflicting info here, I just do both, works GREAT) OR
2) the IP that the PC running the MJ is on (not as good because that is prioritizing everything coming from/going to that PC)
The more specific you can make it; the better the effect
If you have a really sophisticated QoS, then make MJ (or any VOIP) the HIGHEST priority (over the Gaming packets as well)
I once used MJ outside the continental US and the phone conversation was STELLAR quality, with QOS running on an WRT54GS (running dd-wrt) -- I actually couldn't believe how clear (neither could the people I was calling.
PS: One other key comment.
Your UPLOAD speed and latency and prioritization can be MORE important (IMHO) than you Download speed especially if you DON'T have QOS -- because that contains TCP/IP timing/framing packets (I forget the "official" term) AND because that bandwidth is usually MUCH lower than your download bandwidth and therefore can become "saturated" faster.
Honestly, depending the type of data you are shooting back and forth, if you don't have QOS, your Download speed can therefore be limited by your Upload bandwidth because you can saturate that direction of the pipe faster and begin the throttle you Download because the timing/framing/signalling packets can't get thru to the site you are exchanging data with.

fuzyrat,
I sure hope someone else can jump in here and help you but to the best of my knowledge there is NO SERIAL NUMBER to enter - ever.
Got to the MagicJack WEB site an start a chat with one of the Tech Support people and see if they can help you.
PS - What is 2000XP do you mean XP?

I bought my sister in FL a MJ. I live in WI so I cant be there to work on it for her. She lives in the sticks without cable , DSL, or any of the other Hi Speeds. She does have Verizon Hi Speed with the air card. I had her do a speed test and she reported back Down 580kbs and Up 170kbs. I was told by the MJ tech before I bought it that it would work on the air card.. And.. It did..The first three days it was clear and looked like she would be able to use it and get rid of the land line. then she took it to her Daughters for the weekend, it worked there on a laptop. like a champ. then she brought it home, and it sucks. there is a choppy QoS that is unusable. It is like the worst cell connection. She has been on the chat with the tech for 3 nights in a weeks span. I haven't gotten her to set up the headphone with the softphone yet, she hasn't had time to pick up the headset. What info should I ask her to gather for some of the unofficial MJ gurus to tackle this situation? You up for the challenge testing123, or Spambox, or Stewart? Anyone feel the urge to help here? Hope so.. I will probably get her to get on this forum so she will be able to get straight to the answers and relay what her attempts consist of. I haven't dealt with her configuration before, but the aircard is the only hi speed she can get in the boonies.. I did ask that she inquire about more speed, but it seems that MJ only uses between 30 to 80 kbps and she isn't running anything else. She isn't a gamer and only uses the PC for email and personal records. So.. Whatayathink??
msiam,
Just a tid bid of information - I have run Dumeter while running MJ and it uses about 75-80 kbps. It never seems to go below or above that so she should be fine.
The one thing I have never heard anyone anywhere talk about is all these Qos engines running at the same time. My OS has one my router has one also, where I am going with this is I don't think you should have more than one running at any given time. They just have to be fighting each other. I have never had any problems (knock on wood) so I have not pursued a solution for two Qos engines running at the same time (lazy) but I would think it would be like running two Virus programs at the same time one just bucks the other.
Your Sister may have one in her OS and probably does and there maybe one or something similar in her aircard software.
I would also make sure that any Security software she has is set to ignore anything MJ is pipping in/out of her computer. The last think you need is some security software examining every packet of MJ data, if that wouldn't make for choppy nothing would.
Anyway - I would suggest starting by turning off any and all QOS engines and then work backward from their. Bring one back on line and attempt to make it favor and give priority to anything MagicJack.
Good luck
PS - I wouldn't expect a headset to make much difference, I think all of that is transparent to MagicJack.

What's the OS of your sister's PC? What's the OS of your sister's daughter's laptop? If the daughter's laptop's OS is different, MJ device's built-in flash drives may have been downloaded with different OS upgrade that may make the MJ device incompatible with your sister's PC's OS. Search in this forum for way to clear the content of the MJ's flash drive and reinstall MJ fresh with your sister's PC. If you can't find the post then I could help search for it.msiam wrote:I bought my sister in FL a MJ. I live in WI so I cant be there to work on it for her. You can also tell her to run MagicFix to see if it could fix her issue:

Here's the post that shows you how to clear the MJ USB device off the PC's registry so that the PC will force fresh installation of the MJ device:
http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/very ... 0magicjack
Here's the excerpt:
----------------------------
Geatano: Please unplug your magicJack. Now go to "Start" in Windows and click on "run". In there write regedit and press enter.
Geatano: Now click on + sign next to HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE.
Geatano: Click on + sign next to SYSTEM
Geatano: Click on + sign next to CurrentControlSet
Geatano: Click on + sign next to Enum
Geatano: Now find folder called USB. Right click on that and click on "Permissions". In permissions click on the check mark called "Allow" to the right of "Full Control".
Geatano: Click Ok.
Geatano: Now click on + sign next to USB and then find the two folders called "Vid1307", right click on one at a time and select delete.
Geatano: Now click on - Sign next to USB.
Geatano: Right click on Folder called USBSTOR and allow permissions.
Geatano: Now click on + sign next to USBSTOR.
Geatano: Find the folders called "CdRom&Ven_YMAX&Prod_MagicJack&Rev"
Geatano: and "Disk&Ven_YMAX&Prod_MagicJack&Rev"
Geatano: Right click on those one at a time and delete them.
Geatano: Now exit Regedit and then plug your magicJack in.
jack: ok - just plugged MJ back in
jack: looks like it is reinstalling
jack: i think it is working now - thanks!
--------------------
There is another way to reset the MJ device. If I remember correctly, you just have to format the MJ flash drive (not the MJ CD drive) unplug & re-insert the MJ then MJ software (stored on the MJ CD drive) will reinstall everything.
