Great download speed, lousy Upload speed

I'll get right to the point....
I ran the available tests and I have 217-219 Download speed(of a possible 224)
BUT my upload speed seems to be locked around 54k !!!!

Jitter around 700

and Packet Loss is over 20%!!

Here's the kicker..............

I'm in Australia!
I'm on an ADSL connection(same as DSL)
There is one filter on the line(upstream of the modem)

I have bypassed the wifi router with Cat 5 cable - no improvement
I have changed Priority to HIGH - no improvement
I have even made sure there are no other phone cables sprouting from the main incoming line.

High speed internet is not as fast here as in the US. Most YouTube videos I have to back up a few times because they won't load as fast as they play.

When I call my Dad in the US (also on MJ) I can hear him crystal clear, but he gets a jittery version of me that cannot be understood.

This jives with the tests run - high download, terrible upload

Any ideas??? I do not have a booster yet, or any other router gadgets. My raw connection seems to be the problem? OR there is an UPLOAD SPEED setting that needs adjusted????

Any help greatly appreciated!!

Your situation sounds like a relatives here in British Columbia, Canada. Their download is about 200 down and upload is about 60-70. Not enough to support MJ. I called a cell phone in the house, the cellphone rings, but a conversation is impossible.

They are in a rural area and get their "highspeed" Internet beamed wirelessly from a mountain top transceiver about 18 km away. Are you by chance in a rural area and getting your Internet wirelessly? Either high powered wifi or satellite? I know you mentioned ADSL, but I have clients who get their phone and Internet by microwave which arrives at their house over the phone lines, so it's "ADSL" when they see it. But there is a satellite up/down link at the end of their phone line.

Your download speed is probably sufficient to hear your Dad, but your upload rate is insufficient for him to hear you.

Perhaps try Skype or Live Messenger and see if you can carry on a conversation. If neither of those work, it's likely your Internet bandwidth is not capable of carrying voice.

I'm in a major town - Rockhampton, up North on the East coast. Everybody in Australia says their speed is SLOW. Cable internet is only now available in Brisbane. The general phone system base lines are old by US standards. I'm nor sure if there is ANY fiber optic phone infrastructure here. as far as I know it's actually coming in on the phone line - which is on a nationwide network. I don't believe any satellite or microwave is involved. I ran some routing tests - back to sites that I know are hosted in the US and they look really good for the first 17 hops. After that they seem to go through some Deutche network? - with terrible delays and heavy packet loss?? I just don't know if that's in the US, or just before the signal gets off Australia.

In your original post you mention a filter up-stream of your modem.

If I you are stating it correctly and I am understanding what you are saying that is just PLAIN WRONG. Maybe it is your Australian accent that is leading me to believe you mean one thing and are saying another.

There should not be anything between your ADSL modem and the connection to the phone line. !!!

The only place you should place a filter is between any other item you have in your house and the phone line.

1. A telephone (however many you have)
2. Any cable box that requires a phone connection.
3. Any alarm system that requires a phone connection.
4. Just anything that connects to your phone line except your ADSL modem. If you really have one between your modem and the telephone wall jack I don't see how your ADSL is working at all.

Please lets talk about this because if what I understand you to be saying is really true you MUST correct it before you go looking for any other solutions.

Now for the MJ problem itself, 50 kbs down is at the very best marginal. No that is a lie, the unit requires 80 to 100 kbs band width in both directions to work as advertised. If you optimize everything else and absolutely do not allow your computer to do any virus updating, browsing ... etc you may be able to make it work well enough to get by. If you are using it to call a relative in some other country it may be worth putting up with some poor audio conditions but if you are just using it around town it is probably not going to cut it.

Please don't give up just because of what I have said here, I have been known to talk out of my North End. And like I said if you use it to talk to your brother in the States or something similar... don't give up just because some opinionated nut in the USA said "nah won't work".

No Aussie accent here yet - I'm an original OKIE from Oklahoma. The filter is "upstream" of the DSL modem - between the phone line and modem as instructed by the service provide. I terminated all other phone lines from the main box so ther is no other interference.

My Dad asked what provider I had, etc, etc... and I got out the brochure...

SURPRISE!!! They have about 5 SPEEDS of DSL available, and although I circled the HIGH SPEED STUFF, I checked my account and I am on a plan allowing a regulated up/download speed of 264/64k !!! DUHHHHHH!! My speeds tested online at 220/54k <-- Close enough to what they claim!

So, I got into my account and bumped it to the ACTUAL HIGH SPEED ADSL! It will take a few days for them to get to it, and it might not be capable of the full value but should be somewhere around 20000/1000kbps

If it truely changes my test results online, then I'll bet I'll be in business!

oh yeah...for clarification... The filter UPSTREAM of the MODEM came with it, and is actually a SPLITTER/filter so I suspect the outlet for the MODEM is probably UNFILTERED, whereas the outlet labeled "PHONE" is probably filtered.

YES - if it is one of the splitter type one will be marked modem and the other telephone the object being not to tie up the one jack with just the modem.

When I read your first reply I was all set to pounce - with something clever like "now way, it shouldn't even be working". but I have seen and used they type you are talking about. and if you have a "Hot Run" to the outside box you are all set.

When you get the speed update you are going to think you died and went to heaven. And I will personally guarantee you will definitely notice the difference. You may even have to put seat-belts on your computer chair.

On your speed test some of the sites actually deduct the packet overhead which for DSL is about 12% of all the little bits screaming across your wires, which almost exactly accounts for your 64 (they wish) verses 54 kbits (real thru put). I get the same results when I test my 10000/1000 connection. Always close to the advertised but typically a little less because of the packet overhead.

Enough rambling when they turn up th juice for your connection your MJ is going to sound like a Bose stereo system, well close anyway.

Still haven't dealt with a major drawback, regardless of speed

LOL !!

<<<<- Super Dweeb here!! Apparently I signed up for the slug bug version of DSL!! Those speed were regulated by the service provider! LOL

I upgraded to something 10 times faster 20000DL/1000UL speed and it flies now!

Actual speed measured is only 1000/680, but that's enough to make MJ happy

Packet loss is ZERO ans Jitter is only 4-8% Give or take
QOS was 94-98%
