Alternative to thin client - Gateway E2000?

I was just looking on eBay and noticed a reseller has Gateway E2000 computers for sale. They are going (on average) for about $30-$40 plus shipping. They are about the same size as the HP thin client. I realize they have hard drives, so they would use a bit more electricity, but IMHO, these barebones units would run MagicJack great.

Load up a copy of XP Home, plug into your router, setup TeamViewer, plug in MJ and start talking!

hmm 21lbs, i'd say they are quite a bit bigger than a thin client, less than 3lbs, that being said it still looks like it would be an exellent alternative.

Reviewers didn't like the E2000 much. From About.Com at http://pcworld.about.com/news/May302003id110956.htm

This basic system is among the slowest we've tested. Adding up to 1GB of RAM and a faster processor may improve performance--but Gateway's E-4000 is a better option in any case.

Probably still good enough for MJ, though. Keep us posted if you get one.

I had them in my school back in the day... But, whats the use? I mean if your getting a regular computer i reccomend a few dells on ebay...

You could use one of those Gateways or any other desktop PC. One of the big selling points of the thin clients is the very low power usage. You are not likely going to find a desktop that can get anywhere near that power usage.

If that's not a concern, then I would suggest the smaller Dell Kumar posted.

Oops i forgot to mention power, but implied it by posting those ebay items..... the e2000 is a beast when it comes to power.. and its HUGE.. I remember having them in school and them being a PITA.... But that's just my opinion. You could also try tampering with an ATA....

Understand, it will be heavy, but from the photos it "appears" the enclosure looks to be just a bit bigger than the HP thin client. I got my T5710 for $84 and upgraded the memory to 512MB for $15, which puts the overall initial cost about the same.

When I saw the E2000, my thought was, yes, it would use more electricity than the thin client (which is why I purchased a thin client to begin with), but for $29 plus shipping, it seemed like a pretty good deal. Obviously, this is before an OS install, which depending on your source, adds to the cost.

But, despite the weight, I cannot find the dimensions of the unit on Gateway's site and there is very little info about the unit on the web.

I don't know the specifics, but I guess if the unit has a hard drive, a CPU fan (vice heat sink) and a case fan, it will drive up the electricity and probably not make it worth the investment, I just thought based on the appearance (i.e. enclosure about the same size as the TC), it was an interesting concept.

It appears there are Desktop and Compact versions of the E2000.

I think the photo you are seeing is for the Compact, and that that is not what they are selling.
