question for MJ experts. Alarm system and MJ

Post by smaerd58 »

Is it possible to use a home alarm system with the MJ like a landline hook-up so it dials out to alert you or police? Just dropped my Landline now on Dryloop DSL,Thanks

I would deff not recommend relying on the magicjack with your securty system....Also I don't know if it would work....but i just wanted to say that may not be a good idea since they are beta and seem to be down a lot for some people. But i do have a question....If someone does break in to your house and they can't dial out with jack then how to the securtiy people contact you? Do they call you from their own systems or what?.

With a DIY home security system you plug it into your phone line and it dials out whatever number you have put in if there is a break-in. My question is how do you hook up an alarm system and phone through MJ ?

Normally an alarm system is attached to an RJ-31x jack that allows the panel to initiate line seizure.

What??
And what's a DIY security system...I am kinda interested if theres not monthly fee:-D
Kumar

EDIT: P.S this is your best method most likely...
First you have to disconnect the line coming in to all the jacks EXCEPT the one that is running the DSL. Then you just connect your security system to the wall phone jack and your magicjack to the wall jack and it will supply the whole house with the magicjack....
P.S, P.S why doesn't it work for a dish tv but works for security system? I thought VOIP and security systems don't get a long....
Thanks

Kumar, something like this is what I am looking for

http://cgi.ebay.com/Premium-Home-Securi ... dZViewItem

I have one jack I use for my phones. I have 1 panasonic dect phone with ans mach.base unit and 5 additional panasonic dect that rec. there sinal from the base unit just plug. into ac outlets. I am using one outlet that goes from wall to dsl router to computer then usb to phone so how would I hook up the alarm to this? MJ is now house phone. do I put one of those plastic splitters on the inlet side of the MJ adapter and feed my phone line and alarm in that way? Thanks

It DOES work ... (and it also DOES work for FAXes) -- I have tested both.

BUT, I would NOT rely on MJ for this duty ... not yet. It is not yet a "landline replacement"

1) When they allow and Support ATA's
2) And have > 98% uptime (trying to be reasonable there)

THEN consider it.

OTHERWISE, Proceed at your own risk (esp. since you are now relying on a) Electricity; b) Internet Connection; c) Router; d) PC; running e) Windoze, running a f) MJ ... just too many things to rely on)

There are a # of sites that you can google on how to wire up your Home Alarm for VOIP.
Easiest thing to do is DISCONNECT landline at the NID outside your house.
Find where Alarm System connects to House wiring (if you are lucky all jacks go thru the Alarm system and then back to the NID)
Then connect RJ11 to Alarm Module to your VOIP device.

But again, MJ is not ready for this duty. Caveat Emptor.

Ok maybe you are new with VOIP (Not a bad thing at all, don't get me wrong) When you have a landline with the provider they have a wire that goes into your house which supplies all the phone jacks in your house a live line. What you need to do is disconect that wire comming in and make it so it ONLY goes to the DSL modem. After you take out the live line comming in for just your DSL, you connect your Magicjack with one phone wire to the wall phone jack. After this is done all the phone jacks in your house has magicjack when you pick up the phone. So now you just connect the Panasonic to a wall jack, and then connect your security system to the wall jack. It is hard to explain but i am trying my hardest.

P.S about this DIY security system....whats the diff in this and the people you pay monthly fee for?
Thanks and hope it helps otherwise tell me where your need to clarify.

Kumar: no worries, there is a device for approx $30 that you can use to "separate" the DSL from the analog signal. It is the BEST and "purist's" way to do DSL.

Google "secor DSL splitter" or "home run DSL" and you will find what I am talking about. One link: http://www.homephonewiring.com/dsl.html

What it gives you:
1) CLEAN DSL signal -- but to ONLY ONE JACK in the HOUSE (via a "home run")
2) NO need for individual filters on any jacks
3) BEST DSL speed possible within your premises
4) SEPARATED from Alarm System and NO INTERFERENCE with Alarm System Operation -- now Alarm System phone line "cut" during emergency does NOT cut DSL signal (in case it is a false) -- otherwise who cares if the DSL is still connected while your house is getting "jacked" LOL

Unless you REALLY REALLY REALLY do not want to wire the house (or you don't plan to stay long) -- I would stay AWAY from "wireless" alarm systems ... when the battery goes bad you lose your sensors and sometimes don't know it. And, a sophisticated thief may be able to remotely disable or monitor the sensors.

Wired is the way to go if you are serious.

And of course, who your Alarm Monitoring Company is and how good they are, is also very significant.

Alarm is for the wife mainly in case window breaks door opens that kind of thing. Been researching it alarm pad unit has phone in and phone out to telephone like a answering machine has passthrough so I guess that coming from computer to MJ it can go into alarm unit and out to base phone? I just hope it doesn't degrade phone quality,Thanks

I would not set up this particular alarm system on the MJ phone line (the ebay one) And the reason I say this is because of the feature Anti-Phone cutting function which will sound the alarm immediately. Can you imagine how many times your alarm will be going off when magicjack has their up and down moments? It will be like living at the circus

GSM radio

Post by magicdoctorwookie »

Switch to GSM radio for your alarm system and take MJ out of the picture. Search the net, you can find alarm monitoring by GSM radio at reasonable monthly rates. That solved my issue.
