New MJ, has dial tone, but won't make or receive calls

Hello,

Today I purchased a new Majic Jack from Radio Shack. I plugged the new cordless phone into the MJ slot as indicated on the instructions. I then plugged the MJ into my computer. The instillation process stared and I then registered the MJ as requested. I got to the part where you pick you number and and clicked register or submit (which ever it was) and then the page just closed down and went back to the main MJ screen with the dial pad. I did not even have time to write down the number.

After logging into Majicjack.com I was able to get the phone number, but when I tried to make a phone call, there was a dial tone, but then nothing happened. I called my cell phone number but the phone never rang. I called the number on my MJ account and it just said the caller was unavailable.

I would appreciate any assistance in solving this issue, as it seems there are no phone numbers available for Majic Jack.

The magicJack display shows your phone number in the top bar.

You can change it (free 1st time, $10.00 subsequent times) from your "MyMagicJack" web page: http://my.magicjack.com/ (or get the first one if you really don't have one yet).

Dialing your own number will give you that message until your voice mail is set up.

I installed the MJ just the way it said. I try to make a call and nothing happens, I tried calling from my cell to the phone and I get the voicemail message. This is very frustrating.. I'm running windows vista ....

In order for anybody to begin to understand your problem you must describe the symptoms in detail. Does the softphone start up? Do you have a blue light on the dongle? Do you have "Ready to Call" on your softphone? Can your hosting PC do anything else? The more you detail your environment and your symptoms, the better the chances that one of the members here can assist you in fixing your problem.

Here's my problem in detail. I am running Windows Vista on a Sony Vaio laptop. When I received the Magicjack, I bought a new cordless phone with caller id capabilities. I installed the MJ just like it said. It re-booted itself during install, not sure if it was supposed to or not. But the MJ does not work at all. I get an error that states no input audio devices are available. Speakers and usb internet phone are working according to device manager with speakers being the default. I have a dial tone but can't make or receive calls. On the softphone menu, I am not able to toggle from headset to telephone. Tech support, after 3 hours, finally told me to change the drive letters for MJ and then reboot and good luck! Didn't do anything! This was after going thru 3 techs and finally ending up with a "supervisor". I have a feeling it's a software compatibility problem with Vista, and yes I have done the Vista upgrade several times. Can't find magicfix. The link is no longer good, just takes you to the q&a page. I've tried Everthing I can think of. Any thoughts?

Hi Karen,

If you are using a Wireless LAN to connect your laptop to the network and you are using a cordless phone with the MJ, some cordless phones will interfere with the wireless LAN connection and you network connection will drop that is why you cannot make a call..

When you begin to dial with the cordless phone pay attention to your wireless LAN connection in your system tray on your laptop it will probably disconnect..

Here's what tech chat told me about setting the sound/audio on WinXP that might be of help even on Vista:

Ivan: 1. Click Start 2. Click Control Panel 3. If your Control Panel is in Category View, double-click Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices If not, go directly to the step 4 4. Double Click on Sounds and Audio Devices 5. Click the Audio tab (the middle one) 6. Under both Sound Playback and Sound Recording, select your default audio device (the one you want to use) from the drop down menu * Never select Tigerjet as your default device 7. Click the box labeled Use Only Default Device” (located in the bottom left corner of the window) 8. Click Apply and OK

At least on WinXP, installing MJ did not include a reboot. Have you tried MJ on another machine? Is the blue light on? Have you tried (or has tech chat instructed you to) remove all traces of MJ and start the installation over again? I have the instructions to remove it from the WinXP registry and not Vista. Have you tried using the softphone w/o a 'real' phone plugged into the MJ's RJ-11? If you don't have a phone plugged in, the softphone will not have the toggle between soft and real phone. If you are using a cordless phone have you tried a non-cordless? The list is full of issues with various cordless phones not working with MJ.

Thanks everyone! I had already tried all your suggestions except for removing any trace of the install; from what I could gather it would take hours to remove ALL of it since it imbeds itself so deeply. I did finally get it to work tho. I was told by tech support to disable Tigerjet and not use it for anything. That did not work. I had to enable Tigerjet for both playback and recording. I selected my speakers as the default for playback and Tigerjet for recording. Does not work if you disable it! Now I can make and receive calls.The only thing that does not work is the sound on the softphone. I can't hear anything when I select voicemail or try to make a call. I guess I can live with that since everything else works. But if anyone has any suggestions for this one last issue, I would appreciate it. Thanks again guys!!
