I know I am going to regret this but what are you talking about? What is xlite and bria?

OK - What is counterpath?

Never mind I found it. Can't you call counter path and find out what Codecs they use?

Well this certainly is jumping back and forth.

MJ uses DirectX and the Codec msg711.acm

If you have both of those you will be good to go. It will run without DirectX just not very well and I don't know if it will run without 711 but if it does it will be crappy.

I have never heard of the other two Codecs you mentioned.

So is the default codec still 711u?

I don't know what 711u is but I know that the file by the name msg711.acm is the one you want, plus DirectX. If you don't install DirectX you full duplex won't be very full.

On a call can you still right click on the call window and get the stats? It should say what codec is being used.

That would be G.711U

Thanks

How does that relate to msg711.acm?

As you can tell I know absolutely nothing about these Codec, hell I don't even know what Codec means.

Coder/Decoder.

Softphone users have choices. MJ uses 711, but available are 729 and others. I would assume you simply use the 711 part of the file name you are familiar with, and put G. xxx U to come up with what these techies are using. MSG711.ACM = G.711U

I'm clueless beyond what I've been seeing here on this forum. :D

msg711.acm is the Microsoft file for both the G.711U and G.711A codec

msg711.acm - Microsoft CCITT G.711 (A-Law and u-Law) CODEC for MSACM

mj supports 2 codec, G711u and G711a. I can't tell much difference between them though.

otherwise, if we can choose codecs around freely, the best codec in terms of bandwidth saving would be G729, and G722 wins for best voice quality.

Again, I know next to nothing about Codecs. But you have peaked my interest is it possible to make MJ use the one we want or are the calls and parameter passing different from one to another.

In short can you just rename it and presto???? I know the eternal optimist.

In simple terms there are different algorithms for compressing analog data when digitizing it for transmission. The different Coder/Decoder (codec) methods, which can be applied by either hardware or software, are normally licensed by their creators. Thus companies such as MJ would have to make license arrangements with the creators of patented methods in order to include them in their product.

This area of compression especially as it applies to voice compression for transmission in digital form across lossy networks is an art/science of it own! Each of the methods has strong and weak points and their characteristics differ; but on each end of a transmission the compression methods must match. Whatever method was used to encode the data must be used to decode the data.

MJ announced sometime back that they would be implementing a "new and better" codec in the near future I believe. My bet would be that they will be using Speex if/when they do.

As VaHam said, the CODECs on both ends must match. That's the bad news. The good news is that the two ends know how to negotiate with each other to find that match.

The bottom line is that you must enable G.711μ (yes, that's really a Greek mu and not a roman u, but it is called "u law" because American programmers are too lazy to find the μ character) and that you may enable anything else you have. This is because, as of right now, all of MJ's termination providers (when you make a call) and origination provider (when you receive a call) only speak G.711μ and MJ does not offer transcoding (presumably, to keep prices low).

When you call from one MJ user to another, though, MJ's server is smart enough to recognize its own user's phone number and to route the call to that user without paying for a PSTN dial-out call. In that case, your MJ (or substitute) and the other user's MJ (or substitute) may agree to use another CODEC that consumes less bandwidth. Of course, all of this happens in milliseconds and behind the scenes.

eyeBeam incming call problem

Post by taariqq »

I am trying to configure eyeBean 1.5.19 to use with mj, simply because mj does not have the 'call transfer' feature yet ... and it works with eyeBeam.

But, I am having one problem. If comeone calls me from a non mj phone, I can hear them talk, but they can not hear me!

Is this a codec issue? or does it have to do with some settings?

I have added all the codecs that eyeBeam had available. They are;
BroadVoice-32
BroadVoice-32 FEC
DVI4
DVI4 Wideband
G711 aLaw
G711 uLaw
G729
GSM
iLBC
L16 PCM Wideband
Speex
Speex FEC
Speex Wideband
Speex Wideband FEC

711a is used primary by European carriers and 711U is used here in NA

The steadfast rule is that the CODEC you choose and the one that the "other side" chooses must match exactly. The SIP protocol manages this negotiation automatically. You list the CODECs you wish to choose from and so does the other side, and when one of you calls the other the negotiation takes place and you talk. This generally occurs on the most bandwidth conservative CODEC that the two ends share.

Unfortunately (gee, that word comes up a lot when talking about MJ), MJ does not always perform the negotiation properly, and a problem like yours comes up. I recommend you disable all CODECs except G.711μ when using MJ, except when you are calling another MJ user you know to have a different CODEC in common with you.

Simple and brilliant mberlant ...
removed everything except 711 ulaw and 729 ... it works!
and thanks for the info gumby357

I am in Pakistan, Karachi to be exact. I am trying to do some virtual assistant type of work for one of my acquaintance back in Boston. The ability to transfer live calls to him when there is a pressing need, was critical ... this is wonderful. What a product! and thanks for the help ... greatful to you guys.

Now onto the new hack ... I've got friends spending tons on Asterisk servers and pulling their hair dealing with Linux ... and I found 3CX, a Windows based free PBX. Though I am not running a callcenter, just half a dozen call per day .. but imagine the possibilities! MAN. I guess I will be able to configure 3CX with sip info from both my mjs ... exciting stuff!
