Using Bluetooth Headset

Post by digitalnomad »

Looking for any info or suggestion on using a Bluetooth headset, or Jawbone. Setup, best pricing on hardware, any software hitches, before I give it a go to use with MagicJack on the road.

I bought one of those $6 cheapo Innovage flip phones...not bad. Now looking at wireless headset.

Thanks

digitalnomad,

OK let me see if I have this right ... $6 dollar phone $100 JawBone and a $25 dollar bluetooth dongle. OK works for me.

Digital, you absolutely can't beat the JawBone. It is everything they say it is on their WEB site Demo video and then some. I have seen them for about $79 if you google a bit.

Bluetooth dongle, the most trouble free no software required bluetooth audio (and stereo if you want) dongle is the Motorola D200. It is completely plug and play no software to worry about. You can plug it into XP just as easily as Vista (and hardly anything is easy on a Vista machine). Moto Direct price is about $25 dollars. Don't buy the Motorola conventional and more expensive bluetooth dongle. It is junk compared to the D200 and the software it uses will fight you at every turn. This is a case were cheaper is very much better.

If you go with that combo I am positive you will be pleased with the choice.

I use both the Jawbone and the D200 and have never had anything but satisfaction from the combo and believe me I have wasted more money on BT headsets than I care to admit to.

PS - Be careful with the Google-ing for the cheapest JawBone, if it sounds to cheap to be true it is probably a "Knock Off".

[Edit] Not to be patronizing but just in case someone does not know what I mean by a Knock-Off: "Knock Off" = Asian pirated look-a-like not a real Motorola device. I have seen this done with Motorola BT Stereo headsets. What you get is cheap and is definitely not a Motorola device and you stand about a 50/50 chance of it working correctly.

Thanks HGT.

Just testing different things for mobility to write about. I never have had a Bluetooth headset, so I was looking for some honest opinions.

I figure there is no risk at $6 to see how something works? I can always give it away, or round file it it does not work.

Digitalnomad,

I purchased a $19 dollar AT&T/Motorola go phone at Wal-mart for my mother; had I purchased it from Motorola it would have cost about $150 dollars. The $19 dollar phone while not built like my "won't mention the price" Motorola Razar2 V9 it functions ever bit as well. I don't know how they can sell the pay as you go phones as cheaply as they do or maybe I should rephrase that I don't know how they get away charging so much for the pre-pay phones.

[Oops] I thought you were talking about a Cell Phone, I just looked up the phone you mentioned and much to my surprise - it is a land line phone.

DKWebber,

Don't know anything about your second question but there is only one model of Jawbone so you don't have to worry about choices.

http://www.jawbone.com/demo.php

After you watch the Demo and are able to control you excitement Google around and see what the best price you can come up with is.
You can buy them at Best Buy, AT&T stores, and any of the bigger reputable dealers on the WEB. If the price is too good don't go there, the clone/fake industry if flourishing so be careful with the eBay sellers and if the price is too good to be true you can bet your bottom dollar you are going to get taken with a fake.

PS - there is absolutely no misrepresentation in their demo, I have one and it really does what they say it does. It is bar none the best BT headset you can buy. The Motorola H12 is a clone of the noise canceling technology (I have one of those also) but it can't hold a candle to the JawBone.

I have a bluetooth headset that works OK for audio on my mj - but I can't pick up calls or hang up the phone using the buttons on the headset.

Does anyone have any hints on how to make pick-up and hang up work?

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the Jawbone recommendation I just purchased one on eBay (I had verified before that it was absolutely a Jawbone. I nabbed a Red one for $56.) Don't need a dongle due to Mac's having Bluetooth built in so I'm set there. I also picked up one of those Innovage mini flip phones due to my wanting to have a choice at times. Couldn't find the Innovage cheap so I slightly overpaid but at least its purchased now.

DCSholtis,

Don't get too disappointed if you don't get the email. I bought three at three different times and only on the first did I receive a confirmation email. But to boaster you back up I received all three in less than a week each.

Remember you are dealing with MagicJack who's motto is "SOON"

 Completely understood. I did plenty of research before purchasing, read review and the pros and cons both here and dslreports. Personally I can't wait. It's a very innovative idea I'll give it that.

Soon as I typed the above I got the confirmation email. lol

DCSholtis,

Email confirmation, funny the way things like that work. Glad you got it though, little unnerving to buy something and not receive any confirmation. :?
