Frustration... Dial tone, then nothing.

Hello,

My MJ HAD been working.. But now, I get a dial tone... and dial a number (like my cell phone) but I hear NOTHING on my MJ phone...No ringing, no people talking on the other end, no nothing..... But my cell does ring so I know the calls are going through, but nothing can be heard on my MJ phone.

My "MJ phone" is a simple cordless phone.

Ideas?

Is your softphone set to telephone as opposed to headset? Are the volume sliders set about 1/3 to 1/2 of the way between min and max? Good Luck.

Actually, it seems to be a firewall related issue. I have a highly secured environment, and it seems that maybe the port usage for the MJ service has changed.

Ugh...

You should only need to open ports in the outbound direction. XP's "firewall" is easily reconfigured by newly installed Microsoft products, but tends to be troublesome to reconfigure for newly installed non-Microsoft products.

I actually have a Watchguard Firebox device for use at home.. I have in/outbound rules for every packet entering/leaving my network.

I'll just need to monitor and tweak I guess since MJ uses lots of random upper UDP ports...

More specifically (more generally?), the SIP protocol uses a lot of different UDP ports. Although SIP control is generally managed on Port 5060 (MJ uses 5070, which is unusual but not strange), RTP (the packets that carry the actual voice conversation) can be on any port number between 10000 and 20000, where the port number is chosen by voodoo at the time the call is set up.

MJ uses UDP ports 10000-30000 for RTP.

That's what I'm seeing as well... 10000-30000.

But, I've also seen it trying to use 50009 and 30719.

If you see that again, take a screen shot of whatever you're looking at and PM me here.

Are you sure those were ports on an MJ destination server? A lot of people who use a restrictive firewall (which doesn't allow access to the internet) report seeing ports in the range you mentioned. But, they're seeing the ports opened from the softphone to the firewall (or router). Not the port numbers being opened by the firewall (or router) on the MJ server.

Thanks for that offer. It MAY have been something other than MJ.. But i have a stripped down PC that only runs MJ. Nothing else is installed, but who knows.
