PC Mag Editor's Choice Award (One year Later....)

Post by az2008 »

PC Magazine reviews MagicJack (one year after their Editor's Choice Award). It's not too positive. It tends to center on Dan's emphasis on PT Barnum-style marketing rather than *service*. But, concludes (as most MJ users do) that "it's still a good deal" at $1.66 per month.

And, an article summarizing PC Magazine's experience:

It's nice to see someone offer a critical analysis unlike TelephonyOnline's gushing praise of Dan's marketing ability (while remarking in a footnote they aren't considering the quality of the service).

Both articles are mostly on target, but both articles show the same decided lack of journalistic thoroughness.

Aside from two journalists who make grammatical mistakes in a professional magazine, they both displayed the same error -- namely, they both said that MJ costs $40 for the hardware plus $20 per year for service. Heck, learning that the first year is included is one of the only bits of information that you can actually glean from the MJ web site. Yet, these two "professional technical journalists" missed it, twice each, both this year and last year.

Additionally, neither author seems to understand or highlight that it is generally unacceptable to recommend either a registry hack or a port forwarding setting in a router to make a SIP client work. Both simply commented that these modifications are beyond the capabilities of the intended customer base, but not that they are unacceptable procedures.
