I can't reboot??

Post by Jacksondale »

OK this isn't entirely MJ related though it started when I got my MJ so I'll post it here and see if anyone can help. When I received my MJ I plugged into a USB 2.0 card on my computer. Since the MJ is pretty big I needed to free 2 plugs in order to plug it up. So BIG DUMMY me unplugged a USB cable (without tracing it first) and later found that I had unplugged my 160gb external hard drive without shutting it down first. The drive came back up and Windows still sees it, all files are accessible but the problem is.. I can't reboot my computer now without disconnecting this external drive first. If I forget, then my computer hangs when it reaches the startup screen where you should see the Windows logo. I just see a blank screen and the computer doesn't respond. I pull the drives USB plug and reset and Windows starts normally.
Shot in the dark here but there are some really smart people here and maybe someone has dealt with an issue like this before.
Maybe a system restore to just prior to receiving my MJ???

System restore should do it. Can't hurt to try. I have had various MJ problems that system restore solved.

Yes try System Restore Point. One question: Did you plug the MJ in the SAME USB port as that the external was in, or another USB?

PS BTW, did you see/notice the USB extension cable that came w/ MJ; that way you don't have to unplug/disrupt your other USB devices because the MJ dongle can't fit.

I'm pretty sure that I did plug into the same USB port. And yes I saw the extension cable but I had "Magic Fever" and only had eyes for getting up and running. Right now my MJ is plugged into my powered hub so maybe a system restore is the only way to go. Thanks I'll let everyone know what happens.

OK, plug your other peripherals BACK in to the original USB ports; then plug the MJ into any other USB port using the extension cable ... see how that works.

Yep That did the trick, my external is back into the same port and my MJ is on the powered hub and my computer rebooted with no hangup. Thanks a million! Some years ago when I bought my first real modern computer (a Gateway) it came with what was called Gateway Goback. I thought then this was an idea that had to catch on...lol

Good to hear!! Be careful, because MagicFix can't cure MagicFever :P (Maybe MagicChix can :) )

There should be a sticky on how to un install the MJ from your Computer and how to format the MJ in case it stops working!
