MagicJack not starting HELP!!!
HI, I received the Magic Jack yesterday and spent about nine hours yesterday and another three hours today trying to get it to work. I’ve talked with Ben, Lucky, Ashley and Antonie at tech support and we went through many upgrades, removing of programs, downloads and cold restarts. I’ve also tried 4 different USB ports on my computer.
When I try to start the phone connection I still get the popup that says… “Magicjack was unable to contact our registration server”. The buttons on the soft phone do start AOL, The Weather Channel and Yahoo. There is still a message on the smart phone, “Forbidden you do not have permission to access http:// render.talk on this server” I’ve asked several times for a replacement MagicJack.. but no one offers to send one. So, I’m ready to give up unless anyone has anything else to try?

Hi, thanks for the replies! This is my home computer running XP with service pack 2. Comcast as the high speed provider. It doesn't have a firewall installed and virus software is turned off. The Windows security firewall is also turned off.
I also did this..
Click Start tab and open your control panel... Go to internet options.. under privacy tab.. slide bar down to "allow all cookies" under security tab click on "trusted sites" then click the "sites" button.. type the following address into the text bar.. reg.talk4free.com click the "add" button.. now type in the following address.. my.magicjack.com and click "add". uncheck the box at bottom left of window that says "require server verification..." click "ok" then click "apply" close the internet options. unplug the magic jack and plug it back into a different usb port.

Devin,
http:// render.talk Does anyone recognize this. I don't think I have heard of this mentioned in any post.
If the above URL is not MJ related you might want to check your HOST file and make sure there is not some bogus address in it that is sending you off to God only knows where.
I am just shooting in the dark, but maybe you will get lucky and find something in the host file that is not supposed to be there.
Also - If you have deep enough pockets order a new MJ and when you get it return the old one for "cause" if you are still in your thirty day trial period.

Do you have any issue with internet browsing using IE or Firefox? Try to open a command prompt windows (Start/Run, type in cmd, press return) and type in the following:devin wrote:Hi, thanks for the replies! This is my home computer running XP with service pack 2. ping magicjack.com
You should receive 4 line responses from magicjack.com if your internet connection is working.
In Internet Options/Connections/LAN Settings, do you see any check mark for Proxy settings? If so, uncheck them, press OK to save the new settings. And try your MJ device again.

Hi! Yes, I just pinged magicjack... and received four line responces back from them just as you said.LikeMagic wrote: Do you have any issue with internet browsing using IE or Firefox? Try to open a command prompt windows (Start/Run, type in cmd, press return) and type in the following:

I also looked at the Internet Options/Connections/LAN Settings and there were no proxy settings marked.
I normally use FireFox, but when I just tried to open Internet Explorer I got this...
"Forbidden
You don't have permission to access http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=74005 on this server. Apache Server at go.microsoft.com Port 8100"
I think you are on the right track!!
Hi, yes it is strange... but that message and address appears in the left hand side box on the soft phone... but it is very dark and hard to see.Gerry_52 wrote:As I re read the original problem, and as HolmanGT has already pointed out the address http:// render.talk seems suspect. Can you please recheck that address. I've searched the forum and there is no mention of that address. Just seems strange. Anyone else?
Devin,
Have you checked your HOST file it really should be empty except for possible 127.0.0.1 anything else you should delete.

It seems your PC has a proxy server running at port 8100 and it interferes with your internet traffic. You indicated that IE's connections setting had no proxy and this is why your IE does not connect to the internet (since a proxy server is running in the background filtering/block internet traffic). Your Firefox works so it must have proxy settings enabled. Check to see if Firefox has any proxy setting by going into Firefox's Tools/Options/Advanced/Network/Settings. If you have any proxy server program running, you must first uninstall it and then set Firefox's connection to "Direct Connection to the internet".devin wrote:

Do you happen to have Cookiecop installed in your PC? CookieCop is a proxy server used to filter internet data & cookies. CookieCop uses port 8100 as default.

Uninstall CookieCop or similar internet filter program you may have installed and then try your MJ again.

same problem for me. tried everything, nothing worked. opened the usb ports, dislabled firewall and antivirus and all, their top 10% troubleshooter tried helping me, to no avail, then he eventually hung up on me!
anyway, i run xp pro. i decided to try the magic jack on my sisers laptop, just for the heck of it, she has vista. plugged it in, worked like a charm! did the registration and all on her laptop, then out of frustration just plugged it back into my xp box.
its working perfectly...
just for the heck of it, if you have any other box you can access, try plugging it in there, and if it works, register it there, then plug it back into your own box!
** my sisters box has firewall and norton running, didnt touch any of them, so they dont really have anything to do with the error....
I got told my internet connection was too slow, yet i have DSL... if it worked on thesame network, different system, magicjack still has to explain why i cant register in on my own xp pro.

Yup, i had to do the exact same thing on my Win7 box - spent almost 6 HRS. on the blower with tech support to no avail. Thought came to me to try on a friend's laptop connected directly to the internet (no router) and voila, within 10 mins. was good to go.
Came upstairs, plugged in the MJ and it worked on my rig no problems, even after a reinstall of Windows.
