CD Drive conflict

MagicJack ate my CD Drive! It was on (F), which magicJack took over. With 'Higher Level Tech Support' (HA!), we moved magicJack to (M), but the CD player still won't show up in Windows Media Player- only CD Drive (M). MagicJack says they'll try to figure it out- has anyone else had this problem, and is there a fix to try?

I haven't had that problem. If I did, I would right click My Computer, "manage" and navigate to Disk Management. There it is possible to assign different drive letters to a CD drive (or, to MJ's two drives).

That's what we did, but the CD player does not show up in device manager, and reassigning the magicJack drive only changes which drive appears in Windows Media Player- the CD player is no longer recognized by the computer or WMP- it seems the (F) Drive link is so broken that the CD Player is lost!

What do you see from my computer->manage->device manager, expand DVD/CD-ROM drives? Do you see your CD device? An icon indicating it's unrecognized?

If it were me, I'd try right clicking it and updating the driver, uninstalling it, scanning for new hardware, etc. But, I'm reluctant to suggest that to you because I haven't had much hardware problems, and might tell you to do something that would make it worse.

Thanks for the help, Mark. The CD player is not there, so it's possible that it crashed during the changes, or that it needs to be reinstalled. Since it's plug&play OEM, I'll dis- and reconnect it to see if it gets found. More later.

Just right-click in the Device Manager and ask to Scan for New Hardware. Or, reboot.

Yep, tried that. Still no recognition- my best guess is that it's still on (F) but that drive path is no longer functional, so the computer doesn't see it.
