SIP user agent name

Hello,
I'm wondering how people are keeping their ATA up to date with the user agent name. The best would be to enter the info that you currently have and forget about it, but of course MJ will update the user agent. At which point, the ATA users would need to update their string as well.

But the question is, how do you guys keep up? (without needing to plug "the jack" back in). Are there any tricks? Could this information be polled somehow? (again without "the jack"). Is there typically an announcement of such changes on these forums? (that would be nice and a great idea if the forum admins could do something like that).

This is only conjecture, but here goes. I believe in the theory of low hanging fruit. Given that, I believe that putting any legitimate string in that field (today's, last month's, last year's) will keep your ATA under the radar for much longer than those ATAs that still advertise their true colors.

So, if/when we start hearing about ATAs with their native User Agent strings getting picked off, that is the time for us to be more vigilant in keeping our own User Agent strings up to date. Until then, it's never a bad idea to update the string when you think about it.

I don't see any "User Agent" field in the advanced view of my Linksys WRTP54G router. This is using the 3.1.27 firmware that is basically the SIPURA interface.

I've had MagicJack running continuously through my router for over 2 weekswith no problems. I don't expect they will change my User ID or Password.

So which field is the equivilent to "User Agent" in my configuration?

My PAP2 has it listed on the SIP tab.

Aha! If it is in the SIP page, then it is independent of LINE 1 and LINE 2. I have "$VERSION" in the "SIP User Agent Name", and the "SIP Reg User Agent Name" is empty.

I am using LINE 1 with ViaTalk, and LINE 2 with MagicJack. I don't want to put anything on the SIP page that is only relevant to LINE 2.

ViaTalk doesn't care if you access them from an SJPhone softphone, but MJ does expect you to, so you get to decide whether to put the SJPhone label into that field.

Which field? "SIP User Agent Name" or "SIP Reg User Agent Name"?

So far MJ has been working fine. I hardly use it though, except for testing purposes.

So.. what is the entry there?? I have a PAP2 and SipUser Agent Name is $VERSION and Sip Server Name is $VERSION. Should these be different??

I would put the SJPhone string into the SIP User Agent field. That is the field that gets transmitted to the SIP server in the Register packet. And, it's what my servers receive from connected clients.

Soo.Excuse me... Please let me ask specifically.. Is the SJPhone string "SJPhone"?? Is that what will go into the user agent field??

msiam, Use the entire string "MagicJack/1.80.466c (SJ Labs)", substituting, of course, your own most recent information and leaving out the quotes. I apologize misremembering the layout of the legitimate string.

mberlant.. thanks for the answer.. and I don't want to seem like I don't know what you are talking about, but, I don't know what you are talking about.. Just throwing a little humor out there before I reveal my true baffled self, "MagicJack/1.80.466c (SJ Labs)" I have no idea where that is found. My most recent info to replace "1.080.466c" ?? This is the first time I've read that I need a string replacement. Since you have explained it and, I do, believe what you say about needing to dig that info up.. You are quite knowledgeable to how all this magic happens with VOIP

.. I just cant get my head around where to look for this "String" I did a search on the forum and can't come up with anything that looks like what you are describing. Hey everyone else... Do all of you get it and am I just standing here looking like

all by myself?? mberlant, buddy, "I jis done giddit"!!,<<(misspelled on purpose, I know how you hate the grammar glitches) Anyway, if you would please point me in the right direction as to where I might get the correct "String", I would most appreciate it.

You would need a utility to get your SIP credentials. Search ths forum for "Stroths MJ Utilities". One of the functions is "Get SIP credentials". It will make a text file of your MJ credentials (one of them is the user agent name).

"SJPhone" has always worked for me on an old SunRocket SPA-2102.

I have searched and found too many threads but no easy summary (guide) on how to config the PAP2 V1 - as this happens to be frequently requested information, could someone PLEASE summarize how to config a PAP2 V1 (unlocked) with MJ information once they get the relevant information using Stroths MJ Utilities.

On PAp2 Line 1 (or 2) advance page:

Anything to do with STUN or NAT should be off - which should mean (needs verification)

Either one/both of above needs to be "MagicJack/1.80.466c (SJ Labs)", without quotes & substituting appropriate most recent information.

Try wireshark. You can see all the data passed back and forth between you and MJ with it. That is the easiest way to find the Agent string but I believe the one mberlant already provided is the latest one. "MagicJack/1.80.466c (SJ Labs)"

This changes with each new revision of MJ updates.
