Laptop Audio System Power Management

Post by murphy »

I have had a continuing problem where after about a day I could make and receive calls but the audio path would be totally silent. This included calling in to check voice mail. I had previously configured the USB root hubs in Device Manager so they couldn't go to sleep to save power. I am using an old laptop to run MJ. It has SigmaTel audio hardware. I just discovered that the configuration screen in the control panel for the SigmaTel hardware has a check box to power down the hardware after 5 seconds. This can't be good. It will take a day or so to see if this was the problem. In any event in addition to making sure that your USB root hubs can't turn off, also make sure that your audio hardware can't turn off.

I have been running for over a week since I prohibited the Sigmatel audio controller from being powered down. There have been no instances of a connected call with no audio during that time.
